Worst customer service ever.
1 out of 5 stars
Worst customer service ever.
The unit was good for some things, but multiple times following pretty standard recipes from the Instant Pot manual itself the unit gave an overheating warning and before much could be done food was scorched on the bottom. One night it gave another warning the food was overheating, and sure enough it was burning the hell out of a baked bean recipe with plenty of liquid. I had to toss the food down the garbage disposal, and a while later there was a very bad electrical smell from the kitchen. The unit was smoking, popped, there was a spark, more smoke. Very noxious fumes. I contacted customer support. They requested pictures and I sent them. Here was their response: "Thank you for the pictures, we are sorry that your base got melted did you left the base on after you took the inner pot out or left on top of a heating element, our pot has 10 safety features to prevent any over heating, by the pictures that you send the melting is from the outside in is perfectly melted evenly and clear that was sent on a heating element, you can definitely purchase a new base for $60.00 Please advice." Asking if I left the base on after I took the inner pot out?! Is it against the warranty to do this, because that's a pretty normal practice when you're cooking complicated things that need drained or swapped out. Did I "left" it on top of a heating element? Ummm, left if on a heating element, as if it's okay to put the unit on an open flame, just don't leave it there? WTF? And wouldn't their be grill marks? hah Telling me the unit has 10 safety features so surely couldn't have had an issue.... again, google instant pot recalls. Units had to be recalled previously because they were transmitting electricity throughout the entire units posing a risk of electric shock! I very clearly explained to them it was having issues cooking things properly and kept burning stuff, and then this happened which smelled like an electrical problem, as there was smoke and a capacitor that popped and noxious fumes.... and the response: "That is correct, the overheating error will appear on the screen and the pot will turn it self off, this damaged was not cause by the heat inside the base, as per your picture the whole heating element is untouched. Please advice if you want to proceed in purchasing a new base." They're trying to say the overheating error on the screen has to do with electrical fires as well as your food getting too hot.... and that because the heating elements were fine inside the pot that it's obvious the unit didn't malfunction electrically, despite the electrics obviously not being inside the pot, but under, where it burned and melted. UPDATE: I first emailed them March 20th. After incoherent and very defensive/obstinate responses from customer support, including an email that said "please see the pictures attached from honest customers" with three straight emails sending me pictures I didn't request, I asked the customer support agent to stop and to forward our correspondence to a supervisor. The response "I did not spam your email, i did send you pictures of customers that had melted their pot, and proof that this kind of damaged is not cause by the product but from the user." Funny thing is the pictures attached looked nothing like the damage to my unit, but whatever, after requesting to speak with a supervisor the customer service agent said she'd send me a new base. I again requested to speak with a supervisor, for the third time, and got a response from someone else who again address no concerns, didn't respond to anything that had occurred, and simply emailed me saying the base was being sent by fedex. Please note that I didn't ask for a replacement, nor authorize it, and they simply sent one without asking or verifying my address, so sent it to my previous address since that was listed on the invoice I provided. So now somebody is going to get a random pressure cooker base in the mail and a supervisor has still not contacted me as I requested. I've never in my life seen such bad customer service. From denying your product could ever be faulty, to then determining with a few pictures that not only was it the customer's fault but that it would be a good idea to send three straight emails to the customer with pictures of OTHER people's damage claiming it's from 'honest' customers, and of course trying to SELL the customer a new product every step of the way. Then, to top it off, when I request a supervisor review the interaction and contact me I get ignored other than them apparently thinking it appropriate to send a new base out without any verification or request so it goes to someone else! Absolutely absurd. And, like I said, the unit was neat at first, but I kept getting overheating errors messages and burnt/wasted dinners. And if you ever do have a problem with the unit good luck trying to communicate with them.

FANTASTIC MACHINE!! In the 48 hours I have owned this machine, I have made a quinoa/chicken stew, a mung bean/millet squash stew, shiitake mushroom broth, yogurt and bone broth. I'm gonna have to buy some extra counter space for this. I live in NYC, and counter space--storage space is at a premium, so every kitchen apparatus appliance gets a thorough consideration before I invite them into my space. With this device, I can get rid of a small slow-cooker and a yogurt maker. I was clearing out a space in a cabinet, but I don't want to put this away!! I love that there is a function called "keep warm"---I made bone broth last night, and it is currently keeping it warm.

The reason I went with the "smart" version of this machine was specifically to make bone broth. There is a script that was written by Laura Pazzaglia for bone broth--from your smart-phone or tablet google bone broth and her name and the recipe will pop up--you can click a button that will save the script to the Instant Pot app and from your phone you can run the script. The advantage to this over the regular DUO or LUX versions is that to make the bone broth, you need to vary the temperature and pressure release, and otherwise you would have to do it manually every so often, and it's much easier to just "set it and forget it."

It would be super-cool if you could connect with this thing long-distance, through wifi. As it is, your smartphone or tablet needs to be in range to communicate with the Instant Pot, but I just think it would be so great if you could put ingredients in on your way out the door in the morning, and then use your phone to turn it on when you are on your way home.

I have been telling everyone about my fabulous new machine. I love to cook, but sometimes I get lazy or time-pressured, and just order in for convenience. With this machine, I've been able to create delicious and healthy meals very quickly. Cooking stews, grains and legumes is fast, and there is also something about the technique of pressure cooking which seems to meld the ingredients even more than long cooking on a stove. I practiced macrobiotics for years, and they were always on about how much easier life is with a pressure cooker. The stovetop ones always kind of freaked me out, so this is my very first pressure cooker, and I can't believe I've gone so long without one!! These days I've found that no one diet per se works for me---I was paleo for a while, but then I would crave grains and binge on refined carbs like rice noodles from the delicious thai place down the road--so I've recommitted myself to a diet of my own making---focusing on whole gluten-free grains, legumes, veggies and grass-fed meat. This tool is PERFECT for me---cooking whole grains and legumes, and trying to incorporate a plant based diet takes time, especially if you want to soak your seeds, nuts, grains and legumes (which is recommended to get the phytic acid off--it's an enzyme inhibitor and is slightly carcinogenic).

I LOVE the yogurt making function---I did a lot of research on these Instant Pots before ordering---if you don't really care about bone broth (which you should, unless you're a vegan---bone broth is super-healthy for your immune system, gut and bone health--all of that collagen is regenerating--think of it as a fountain of youth)---but if you don't care for bone broth or other scripted recipes, then the less-expensive Duo or Lux would probably work just fine. The Duo has the benefit of a yogurt setting, and the Lux, which is cheaper again, does not.

Some other reviewers have had problems pairing their devices, so far I have not. I wish it were compatible with my Kindle Fire HDX, but so far the App is not available in the Kindle App store (maybe this will change--HINT, HINT??!!). It works fine from my iPhone 6s. I have not tried to create my own scripts yet---I do wish the manual had a little more detail for this--or the app---it doesn't seem very intuitive, but I haven't really tried too hard yet, and again, I've only owned it a couple of days.

Just received the Bluetooth Instant Pot this afternoon and already very pleased. After downloading the Smart Pot App, I did have a little trouble getting it to pair but quickly realized it was user error. During pairing it directs you to hold the Adjust button for 3 seconds. Duh, when after a count of 3 it did not yet connect, I continued to hold the button. After reading the instructions a bit more carefully I realized I was shutting off the Bluetooth function on the pot (you can turn it off and on by holding the Adjust button for 10 seconds). Once I simply released the button after 3 seconds it paired just fine. The bluetooth is not absolutely necessary but I am a fan. The App has some recipes plus you can also create your own. I have already created one recipe. The recipes will of course list the ingredients. After you have added them and closed the lid you simply push the "Start" on the App and it automatically controls all the functions (heat, pressure, time) that are programmed into the recipe and stops the cooking when complete. You can add descriptions of the steps, serving ideas, etc, and can even import a photo of the dish. Pretty cool because then you do not have to try to remember all the steps when you make the recipe another day. Simply load the ingredients. close the lid, and push start.
First thing I did was to make hard boiled eggs. They turned out great. This evening I ventured farther and made Squash Soup. I have never had squash soup before in my life but it is really delicious.
Oh a couple other things. I was initially worried that the pot was defective because the lid closes so easily and it is actually loose when closed. But sure enough when I started it up the lid sealed tightly to build pressure. I also was trying to determine if the Pressure Release valve had to be locked in somehow...it does not, it simply sits on the vent pipe.
I do have two manual style Presto pressure cookers and you can cook the same foods in those, but the Instant Pot is far superior for meal preparation (Presto is of course better for pressure canning). Very cool machine. If you are having trouble deciding to buy, don't mess around just simply click the "Buy It Now" button!

I think that this thing has turned me into a pothead. I have had it a couple of months now, and am always looking for new recipes to try in it. I had an old yard-sale crock pot and a rice cooker, but not a pressure cooker. The rice cooker died, and was looking for a replacement, when I came across reviews of this item. I had always wanted a pressure cooker, and the idea of eliminating several items (rice cooker, crock pot and pressure cooker) to have a single item was very appealing. As a geek, I also liked the idea of feedback control that would actually keep food from burning, or something. I now use all aspects of this thing, even to sous vide. I added a little pump to circulate the water, but that is probably not really necessary. Yesterday I did a think NY strip steak, and then finished it off with charcoal in the chimney starter. It was perfection. I have also made soup, and tikka masala, and rice, and mashed potatoes, and fish, and fried rice with vegetables, and stew, and....

Before searching for recipes I was not aware that there was a whole cult following thing about this object, which is probably good. Otherwise, I would have been turned off and not bought it. I do find this thing very useful, however. It is fast and fun, and easier cleanup at the end of the day. I do like having the control and feedback information via bluetooth, too. However, you might be just as happy with the one with the dial that allows you to control the temperature precisely. I don't know, I haven't tried that one, though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot stuff

Great product and very versatile - don't need a separate slow cooker or rice cooker anymore. No more guesswork as is the case with regular pressure cookers. Dramatically shortens cooking times and retains flavours. Made eight hard-boiled eggs yesterday in less time than it would take to just boil water in a pot on the stove. They came out perfectly and were very easy to peel. Bit of a learning curve regarding the Bluetooth connection but after the first time it's easy. The Instant Pot is designed well and very sturdy. Expect it to last a long time. Quite a few cookbooks available with good recipes. Also bought the glass lid, which is good to have.

I love this! I have always been afraid of pressure cookers, but this is so straight forward to use. I am working my way through all the features and so far so good. I look forward to being able to set the timer on this to start cooking at a certain time as most days we are away from the house for 10 hours and I found that slow cooking that long makes food too mushy. I have used the pressure cooker a bunch of times and the food has turned out so good. I did order a couple of cookbooks as I had no idea how to cook food in a pressure cooker, so this has helped as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Smart Purchase

What's good - it does work exactly as advertised. Using bluetooth (from my ipad) I can program my own recipes or use the provided ones.

Not so great - The programmed recipes were generally not that good. For example the yogourt pre-programmed setting left me with a slimy output. I commonly make my own on the stovetop, and this problem is due to insufficient heating during the 'boil' stage. This problem is because the temperature sensor is right next to the element. When heating quickly it reads much higher than the actual liquid temperature and will underheat things unless you stir constantly. I bought the instant pot to avoid having to monitor the yogourt, so this wasn't great.
-Quick start manual for bluetooth setup skips a necessary step (online instructions were correct)
    - Sealing ring tends to jam under the wire retaining ring, preventing a good seal unless it's loosened before each use. Did not realise this at first, got some bad results. Instruction should be added to manual to check it moves freely each time.

Changes that would be good, and could be made via software
    - Silent mode option
    - Improvements to ipad interface: you can't erase recipes or recipe steps. When you add a recipe step it is always added at the end, so if you want to add an intermediate step (e.g. to slow down heating stages) you have to start over.
    - Lack of flexibility in heating settings; options are 25,50,75,100%. Why not intermediate values?
    - No gradient control. An option 'heat to X°C over Y min' would be nice.
    - Basic option to heat at X°C and hold without writing a recipe program would be nice.

    Hardware changes
    - Stronger heating element would be nice. For example you can't make popcorn, the temp doesn't get high enough.
    - Inaccurate measurement of temperature, particularly when heating at high rates could be solved by a second thermocouple located elsewhere in the unit, but I can see this would be technically difficult.
    - Larger smart units would be great. I keep having to cook beans in batches- It can make about 2 can's worth at once.

    Summary;
A great piece of equipment, happy I bought it, and an excellent value. The ability to write a program is why I bought this, and allowed me to create good results for yogourt after some tinkering. I'm having a lot of fun using this, and find it very handy for beans. Software works okay, but could use improvement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love the pot

I love my Instant Pot - however, I haven't used the Bluetooth function. Wish I would have purchased the non-blue tooth version to save a few dollars - but I love the pot!!! Mostly because I can also use it as a slow cooker (which is probably what I use it more for). It is very good quality and takes up less space than two separate appliances. One "con" is that the silicone picks up odors. If you cook many different types of food (sweet vs savory) than you will need two separate seals. I made yogurt and could taste spices I used to make a roast (even after soaking the silicone in vinegar).

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this thing!

Don't hesitate, this Pot will change your (cooking) life. We have only had it for two weeks and have made bone broth, wild rice pilaf, beef stroganoff, Korean ribs, whole roast chicken, ragu bolognese, BBQ duck congee, perfect soft boiled eggs, steel-cut oatmeal and a decadent chocolate brownie pudding. It synced easily with our phones and does exactly what you tell it to do.

I also purchased a Silit basket insert Silit basket insert, Input for cookware, Steamer insert, Stainless steel, 19cm, 1529602201 for steaming (vegetables, fish, eggs) and it easily fits inside, and is top-quality.

The Instant Pot IP-Smart is a fun kitchen gadget that also happens to make amazing food. I look forward to cooking more and trying new recipes!
