    Very Fun Point and Shoot

    Very Fun Point and Shoot
My first Panasonic camera. Purchased this for the zoom, portability and video capabilities. Does fit in pants pocket, but is heavier and larger than I expected. I posted size comparisons with other cameras I own. Very fun camera to have with me all day. Start up is fast. Zooming in and out is fast as well. The lense is silent while zooming. Which is great when shooting video. The lenses I have for my Nikon D5500 are very noisy and constantly re-focusing. Althogh, the video quality on my d5500 is excellent. My Canon SL1 Rebel is much better at shooting video than my Nikon. Canon's STM lenses are extremely quiet. Focusing is much better, too. The zs60 is awesome for video. Even in low light, the zs60 is crisp at 1080p. The 4K video is also a feature I was interested in. Surprising features is the shooting of high speed videos @ 120fps and 240fps. The higher speed will film in 480 resolution, but is still amazing looking. The still picture quality is as expected for the small sensor. Decent pictures, but don't expect lots of depth to pics. Also, cropping your pics will show all of the noise that the 1/2.3" sensor has. The zs60 feels solid, and has a good weight to it. The control dial on the top and the back of the camera feel cheap. The control ring feels solid. It can be used for manual focusing or changing aperture or shutter speed. Lots of customizations are a attainable because most of the buttons are programmable. The flash is in a bad spot. I have to make sure that i'm holding the camera a certain way or my middle finger will partially block the flash. Both viewfinders are amazingly sharp. I never thought i would use an EVF style viewfinder, but this camera's is really nice. It comes in handy if sunlight is extremely bright. The battery seems to have decent life on it. It doesn't compare to my D5500, but it seems about average. A trick I use to keep the screen from coming on when i don't want it is too place a finger near the eye sensor next to the EVF. The menu system is responsive and crisp. There are a lot of features packed into this camera. It'll take a while to try them all out. The artistic filters are excellent. They can turn the otherwise flat pictures into something better. I have shot video in 4k, but I don't have anything to view them with. So I can't comment on that. But i have tried the 4K burst mode of photographs. Almost all of the pics from burst mode were grainy. The backgrounds were very mushy looking. I took them when it was cloudy outside, so maybe I would have better results if the sun was out. Still experimenting. Overall, I really enjoy using this camera. Update: I haven't been able to figure out the Wi-Fi on this camera. It's confusing. Regarding the pictures I posted, the first one was shot with Artistic Expression filter in the Creative Mode. The second was shot in iA mode. the third and fourth shows the range of the lens. Look in the middle of the parking lot picture. You'll see the white clock tower. that's at 24mm. the fourth pic is the clock tower at 720mm. 5th-7th are just size comparisons. {UPDATE: 6-9-2016} Now that I have been using this camera for 2 months, I have discovered that the software works for transferring images to my iPhone and iPad. The camera is also able to connect to wireless itself, but you need a Panasonic account for that. I have not signed up for that. I had stated previously that video in low light was great. I was mistaken. I was taking videos in low light of inanimate objects (candles; electric and real). But I discovered that filming people indoors, even with decent lighting is terrible. This camera excels in the sunlight. Taking video of my daughter's preschool assembly is pretty much useless. The zs60 smears, blurs and distorts your subjects. I'm still keeping my rating at 5 stars because I haven't been able to put this camera down. It goes everywhere with me. But certain shooting environments really expose the weaknesses of the 1/2.3" sensor. But, videos and pics I have taken of the moon are awesome! I now appreciate the quality of video and pics of my APS-C cameras more. The zs60's size is great. Very small, and that's the trade off: small camera/sensor, less quality of images. This camera also suffers from rolling shutter, a "jello" effect when shooting video. This does not occur everytime I have shot video, but it is noticible. On a positive note, this camera is an excellent macro shooter! You can get as close as 5cm from your subject! Videos at close range are excellent as well (all with proper lighting). All in all, this camera is extremely fun to use. I uploaded more pics. A moon shot, a macro shot and a hi-speed 120fps hd quality (slo-motion) video.

When I saw this Panasonic camera on Amazon for what I thought was a great price I new it was one to buy. It is small; has a great zoom lens (a Leica); easy to operate; and has a very good hand grip/and thumb rest. It also records video in 4K as well as HD. I could take pictures of distant objects that I could barely see with my own eyes and the photos came out very clear and fully recognizable. The photos are sharp, and the videos because of image stabilization are very smooth and non-jerky. Also, there actually is an electronic viewfinder in addition to the screen which is most helpful when lighting conditions are very bright outside. The viewfinder is excellent since you can set it to your eyes and kicks in automatically when you look into it. There are dozens of features for the amateur as well as the professional photographer such as shooting raw and many tweaking capabilities. I love this pocket camera---a must have for anyone from amateur to professional (probably more as a backup camera). If you need a pop out screen the next model ZS70 for $50 dollars more at the time I bought this one may be for you or more specifically for you tube creators though there is no additional audio input. You can't go wrong with this camera and Panasonic actually gave me an extended warranty for 3 years which wasn't described in the Amazon description. You also can't go wrong with an extended warranty through amazon if need be. I thought shooting video and pictures on my Samsung phone or for more extreme contexts with my GoPro---but this camera makes it a lot easier and even better for everyday photos and special trips or events.

I've had the ZS60 for a few weeks now. It's now been on couple of trips. I needed a pocket camera for stills to go where I didn't want to drag my much larger Panasonic Lumix GH-4 and my collection of MFT lenses.

As others have mentioned this camera has a viewfinder. This means that one can work in bright sunlight. The viewfinder is flush with the camera, so if I use my left eye I end up with my nose squeezed against the camera, but it is tolerable. The viewfinder is nice and bright and, if you find where to turn it on (it's one of the on-screen function buttons), it has a very useful artificial horizon (like the GH-4.) As with other viewfinders you may need to turn the adjustment to match your eyes.

The touch screen works OK - my main difficulty is that the touch spots are a bit small.

I used to be a Canon fan - I've used film and digital Canon SLRs for decades. And I've had several of the upper-tier Canon Powershots. The ZS60 does what the much larger Powershots did, except that the zoom range isn't as large. And the trade off is a much smaller camera with a viewfinder (Canon dropped the viewfinder from the Powershots a generation or two ago.)

I've found the auto-focus to work well - although I tend to be a manual focus kind of person (so I have the "peaking" feature enabled.) I like that it has a real ring around the lens that can be used for manual focus.

I saw the comments about how the ZS60 has resolution issues at full zoom or in very dim light. My answer to that is this: The ZS60 is a pocket camera! It would be unreasonable to expect this little thing to perform as well as a full-size or micro-four-thirds sensor camera with a suite of fast lenses at 10x (or more) the price.

I haven't used the flash much yet, but I do see how one can end up covering the flash with a finger.

Some other observations about the ZS60 are these:

      - I am impressed with the auto-macro focus abilities of the lens.

      - Silent mode also turns off the flash. I would prefer that the two settings be separate.

      - In the automatic plus mode I wonder why they put white-balance in two positions on the selector ring and exposure bias in only one. I tend to deal with exposure issues a lot more than I do with white balance issues.

      - There are some mysterious beeps of exposure or auto-focus complaint sometimes on the first shot in living-room lighting conditions. These clear up after a few seconds but they are annoying. I suspect that this is a firmware issue - I have not yet gone through a firmware update.

      - It would be nice if I could tune down the after-shot review to maybe 250ms - For my style of shooting, zero milliseconds is too short and one second is too long.

      - When attached to USB to download to a computer I wish that the lens protector didn't retract and the lens extend. (I'm kind of hyper protective about lenses.)

      - It would be nice if there were a lens cap to protect the lens protector. The lens protection blades look fragile and when the camera is in a shirt pocket I'd like to protect them from branches and other things without having to put the camera into a padded bag.

      - I wish that the markings on the buttons were a tad larger so that I didn't so often need to put on my glasses to read 'em as I am getting to know the controls.

Overall this is a nice pocket camera. Under reasonable lighting conditions and distances it can cover a lot of the same ground as a larger mirrorless DSLR for both stills and video. But being a pocket camera, Panasonic had to make a lot of compromises. I think they did a pretty good job.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ok, it's clearly better than smartphone shots, like come on....

So I just got this phone from the amazon used market and paid $352 (tax included) for it. Saved like $50 and it pretty much looks like it just came out of an unopened box so that alone earns it a 5 star review.

Honestly, for this kind of a price you really cannot go wrong. Apparently there is this one Sony 30X optical zoom - the hx99 - that seems comparable to this one but it's gonna cost you $599 (plux tax) and based on the reviews I'm reading the low light quality is weak as well. So why spend waaaay more for a sony name?

I've always loved the Lumix cameras. My previous one was the FH-22 and it was just a $189 camera over like 10 years ago. It lasted and it's still going with minor wear and tear and screen issues. But it was a great camera.
This right here, is the perfect upgrade (larger lens and 30X zoom, 4k video opposed to only 720p, a manual mode that truly makes the shots look 10X better especially with tripod!) I mean, I've checked out samples to cameras that were over twice as much and this performs just as well. Like the Sony one I mentioned.....same quality daylight photos and I've seen no difference at all on the low light shots really.

Sure do I wish we could get more aperture setting options for those challenging low light shots? Yeah, of course.....but it seems to get these you need a high powered expensive DSLR camera. Because even those$500-$800 dollar cameras seems to not be able to really do it well. So why bother even paying that price?

Again, for the price this beats everything else around this level, I'd say.
And all those who say it's comparable to smartphone shots? No way....I tested them out both side by side taking the exact same shots and everytime it came out much better on the lumix (especially on M setting.) The smartphone absolutely does not work well in low light and even though the lumix is weak here, it performed much better than the smartphone. The only downside in the lumix is the graininess but honestly? The low light shots don't even look THAT bad as some say. They are perfectly acceptable.

I will update this review later with some dim room night shots by the computer in comparison to my smartphone. I am sure this will satisfy those who believe this underperforms compared to the lumix. To me, there is no contest. This is an all around perfect little camera with crazy features in a small little box. I just love it and it even looks sexy as hell.

1.0 out of 5 stars Wrong power plug

The charger came with a European plug and a very cheap international plug adaptor rather than a standard North America plug. The camera does not charge reliably with this setup, if it charges at all.

      The camera itself is great.

Have been carrying a long zoom camera on motorcycle trips for many years. Works good to properly frame shots without having to get off the bike. Got a newer bike, smaller tank bag, no room for the old camera. This one should would fine in the smaller footprint.
