Adjustable yes. “Simply” if you’re prepared.
The “adjustable” nature of these pillows is a feature I’ve never before encountered in a product category where it makes perfect sense. Comfort, after all, is strictly subjective, and all the more so in something as routinely punched, fluffed, flipped and tossed aside in frustration as a pillow. “Simply remove some foam to achieve the perfect fit for you” proclaims the included instruction sheet. “Simply.” But how does one guess at the correct volume of stuffing to remove to satisfy our highly individual tastes? It is in effect playing darts in the dark. I started with an estimation based on just how “overstuffed” I judged these intentionally overstuffed pillows to be, then worked backwards in halting steps, first removing delicate handfuls that seemingly had no effect then ramping up to smaller then larger piles of the stuff. So there we are, elbow deep in a new purchase and flecked with blue and white foam dandruff clinging to skin, clothes and surrounding area. Add the counterintuitive aspect of literally tearing apart an item we’ve just purchased and you get a sense of the consumerist anxiety this process conjures. What I learned while operating on the first pillow helped improve my experience with the second: 1] Spread out a few sheets of newspaper or other disposable material on your work surface to act as a drop cloth for the inevitable mess. 2] Open and pull/roll the outer shell at least half way down the inner shell before you unzip the inner. This prevents stray flakes and chunks of foam from falling in between the liners. 3] Save the clumps and piles of foam you scoop out in paper or plastic shopping bags as you go. This makes putting some back in after testing as well as disposal easier. As far as the end result, I’m pleased. The Xtreme Comforts Bamboo Shredded Memory Foam pillows are what I had hoped they’d be. And unlike the down pillows I’ve used for decades they don’t flatten or poke and they remain cool all night. I may have taken a pinch or fistful too much out of one, though. Good thing I saved that bag of stuffing.
