    Works great at first, but doesn’t last
    Edit March, 2023: this ended up being an expensive mistake. I was going through my reviews and ran accross this review and decided to give it a quick update. Loke many other long term owners have stated, the opal icemaker doesn’t last, and the company only offers a 90 day warranty. Yep, a 90 day warranty for a $400-$500 ice maker? Yeah, it doesn’t inspire confidence in me. In the end, the machine failed after around 2 years of use. It has multiple mechanical failures and ended up sounding like a wailing banshee when it did work. Making ice slowed down to a trickle, and then it finally gave up its ghost. Maintenance is a pain, and you can’t ever get it truly clean. It’s not made to be user serviceable, and several parts that have direct contact with the ice/water are inaccessible. Mold and sludge buildup occur after a few days. Eventually sludge and hard water buildup will start to affect the moving parts and motor, which is nosy on a good day. The eventual end result is a big box that makes dirty ice, while wailing. These are all common issues opal users face, and my story isn’t unique. Take a look online for long term reviews and you will find that this machine doesn’t seem to last more than a year or two if you maintain it well. The only way to make ice without having these issues is to make the ice you want all at once, run a clean cycle with vinegar or Opal’s cleaning kit, dry it out, and store it away. It was nice while it lasted, but I wouldn’t do it again. I could simply buy a bag of ice from sonic twice a week for two years and still have more than $200 in my pocket vs.buying the opal. However, I will admit, this machine is tempting to buy; it has an allure that makes it difficult to resist. It looks nice and the prospect of having this type of ice whenever you want is enticing. If you do buy it, I would HIGHLY recommend purchasing the additional purchase protection plan Amazon offers. Also, make sure to run a clean cycle at least monthly. That’s the only way to make it last and even then, you will probably have to RMA it in two years or so. Previous 2018 review: This is one of those things that you don't need, a pure indulgence. We live less than .5 miles from a Sonic which sells nugget ice, so why buy a $500 icemaker? Because my wife really wanted one, and so did I. Once I placed the order, I almost immediately started having buyer's remorse, because of the cost. But then I remembered that we are huge water drinkers, and I personally love my hydroflask to be filled to the brim with ice cold water, and nugget ice is the absolute best for that purpose. So, my wife and I patiently waited for the ice maker to arrive. It came in on the second day after we placed the order. The shipping process was very expedient. When the package arrived, everything seemed ok. I was impressed with the quality of the packaging, as they even put a piece of decent quality plywood on the top and bottom of the icemaker. A plastic type of styrofoam was attached to the plywood and encased about 4 inches of the top and bottom of the icemaker. The box is probably about 4 inches larger on each side of the device which should give enough room to protect the icemaker in case of rough handling. Upon receipt, I excitedly opened the package and looked at my new, expensive device and was dismayed to find that the side of the icemaker was dented pretty badly. My guess is that the dent came from a forklift blade, but who knows, I could be wrong. I went back and looked at the box, and there wasn't any damage that stuck out, but on further inspection, one can see where the box was damaged in correlation with the dent. the dent is really noticeable and isn't some small aesthetic issue. I ran a clean cycle and then set it up to make ice to see if the damage was more than surface deep and it appears to be working, but the dent really bothers me. My wife and I aren't sure how we want to proceed. We really like the ice maker, but the dent on the side is off-putting, especially since this was a very expensive appliance. Dent aside, this thing makes ice. It makes lots of ice really quickly. Make sure you run a clean cycle before you start making ice! After going through a clean cycle that took around 15 minutes, I filled the reservoir and told it to make ice. An hour later, the bin was a little over halfway full. The ice it'self is just like any other nugget ice. It is about 50% air and is very easy to chew on without breaking your teeth. From the specs, the ice machine weighs a little over 40 lbs, which is leaning on the side of slightly heavy. One other thing to note is that it is not quiet and makes noise when it is making ice. Once it is done, it quiets up significantly. Overall, we are very happy with the ice maker, but the dent in the side is pretty off-putting, especially since we spent so much money. We are hesitant to initiate a return because now we are used to the machine in the house. For now, I am taking one star off for the product being damaged upon arrival. I will update this review once we make a determination

      I waited for about 1 1/2 years before reviewing this product. When I bought the product there were a bunch of negative reviews that it didn't last long and I didn't want to spend 350 dollars on something that only lasted a few months. I believe I know why other units didn't last which I will go over after the review of the product.
      Pros:
      * Great Ice
      * Easy to fill
      * Ice keeps for a while and remakes as the ice melts
      Cons:
      * MUST clean regularly
      * Constantly adding water (daily 1-2 times a day with a family of 4), side tank would probably help
      * Takes up a lot of counter space
      * Can be loud at times, mostly when it gets low on water. Hasn't been a huge issue honestly.
      * In the morning, the ice is half melted, I am not really sure why the low ice sensor never seems to kick on and it really hasn't been an issue, but it is strange :)
      Warnings:
      * If your bin is full of ice and the water bin is full and you lose power, unit gets turned off or unplugged, etc...) when the ice melts the water will overflow. Was almost an issue for me, when the unit accidently got turned off.

      So is the unit worth it? I totally love it and don't regret the purchase, currently the only ice my family uses comes from that machine (even though we have 2 other ice makers in the refrigerator). Refilling the water can be a pain, but it doesn't take long and I hate cleaning the unit, but once again totally worth it for the nugget ice.

      On to the reliability problem. I really think many of the issues have stemmed from 2 different things on the machine. First, you must clean this unit or it will get a mold|mildew issue which can clog the pumps and burn them out (this includes cleaning the air intakes). Second, I have noticed that the low water sensor on my unit doesn't always work as quickly as I think it should. This causes the pump to pull in air which could burn out the pump. I believe if you address these 2 issues you should have no problem with your unit.

      I follow this regime for my unit:
      1. I use distilled water (I notice the drastically cuts down on scale and mold issues between cleanings), if out I will use regular tap, but I preffer the distilled water.
      2. I only clean out my unit every 3-4 weeks (it calls for every week) or if I see scale or any other issue start to pop up. (Regular tap water, I needed to clean about every week)
      3. I use diluted vinegar to clean, run it through 2-3 clean cycles, then use diluted bleach water run it through 2-3 clean cycles, then run clean water through the unit a couple of times, draining each time. Then I throw out the first small batch of ice.
      4. I keep my ice maker running all the time, but I make sure to regularly add water to the unit so it doesn't get low on water.

      I think my cleaning step might be overkill, but it is pretty easy, I just move it next to the sink, and then let the hoses in the sink and uncork them to drain between cleanings. Totally worth the price and upkeep if you like nugget ice.

      I have long been a huge fan of “soft” or “crushed” ice and in my neck of the woods, without a Sonic anywhere close by, there are only a handful of places where you can even buy this kind of ice. Our local hospital has it available on most every floor, and a convenience store or two has it. My husband runs a large continuing care retirement community and they have installed a couple of machines in the last several years that make this kind of ice. I have, on many occasions said “One of these days, I will have a nugget ice machine in my home.” He, of course, knowing that the cost of installing special water lines and drains, as well as giving up enough cabinet space to install an industrial version of a nugget ice maker is beyond cost prohibitive for most homeowners, and he would simply shake his head at me as if to say “I don’t think so, dear!” Imagine my excitement when I came across an advertisement for this little beauty that’s requires none of the sacrifice or costly installation that an industrial machine demands. So, I ordered the ice maker in November, despite my husband’s skepticism about how the ice it produced would compare to that of industrial units. It arrived the next day (Thank you Amazon Prime trial membership). I immediately set it up, ran a cleaning cycle, started it up and had this beautiful stuff of my dreams coming out within 15 minutes. As of this date, I have made many batches of ice without a single glitch or even a hiccup. I cannot speak of anyone else’s experiences, but I can’t imagine anyone not loving this machine. Yes, it makes a slight noise that to me sounds like the fan on my microwave on the lowest setting; that is part of the refrigeration system required to do what it does. The only time I hear squeaking is when the unit is defrosting, which it does for about 10 minutes in the 3-4 hour period that I usually run it non-stop. If one is in the same room with the machine, you do hear these things, but I start it up and go about doing my business as the ice maker does its business so I hardly notice the noise. I make enough ice each time I fire it up to fill a 2-gallon zipper bag, and I keep it in the freezer. It is a little harder this way, if you take it out of the freezer and pop it right into your mouth, but once you pour liquid over it, it softens back up by soaking in the liquid so that when your drink is gone, you are left with wonderfully chewable ice flavored by whatever you were drinking from the glass. I do use spring water that I buy from the grocery store, as our water is from a well, and sometimes is not very pleasant tasting. Each gallon of water will just about make enough ice to fill my 2-gallon zipper bag. I have observed that different brands of water will produce very slightly different textures of ice; I believe this is due to the amount of oxygen in the type of water you choose. I have had absolutely NO issues with leaking from the unit. I will point out that the ice bin does have holes across the back of the “floor” of the bin that are designed to allow any water that melts from the ice to go back into the water reservoir below the bin and that water is then reused in the ice making process; if you pull the bin all the way out and sit it on the counter, a tiny bit of that melted water might run out of these holes and you might need to wipe it up from where the bin was sitting, but to call this “leaking” is beyond absurd. I cannot imagine at this point, how I would manage to live without this wonderful appliance. My husband and I both agree that it’s like it brings a little bit of extra joy into our life to have this ice available to us all the time. It was kinda funny, the other night hubby stopped at a drive-thru to pick up something for dinner and bought us each a drink and when I picked up my drink it didn’t have any ice in it. I asked if he ordered them without ice or if the person working just didn’t put much in and it all melted; he told me he got them without ice on purpose so we could use our “good ice” since it is much better and probably much more healthy than the restaurant’s ice machine anyway.

      I have no regrets about this purchase and don’t ever plan to be without this wonderful ice again in my lifetime. I now consider nugget ice to be one of my basic human necessities. Thank you First Build for an awesome product! Now, if only we could get this technology built into a refrigerator/freezer my life would be even more complete.

      I love pebble ice so much that I was willing to pay $500 to have a machine in my house and it broke within a few months of use. I tried to contact their customer service several times with little or no reply. I jumped through all the hoops they asked to verify the problem and still, months later, nothing has been done to resolve the issue. If yours breaks, don't expect any support or refund.

      When I turn on the machine, the water is pumped through the hose but no ice comes out. It eventually turns off. It is completely useless.
