Almost 2 years, definitely the final update...

Almost 2 years, definitely the final update...
I decided to write my initial review and update at a later time. I feel that would give a fair overview of this product & I also want to be very thorough; $200 is a lot of money to my family, it may be to yours also. I want to make sure you know all the pros & cons before making a purchase. So far - holy moly! It does just what it says it will. Vacuums over my laminate wood floors, area rugs & bathroom/kitchen tile. It does a great job, too! One less thing for me to take care of! I can't make any sense of the pattern it uses on auto clean, but it covers everywhere! There are 2 long haired ladies in my house, plus a shedding dog. I check the dirt container often & empty as needed. Our hair has gotten wrapped around the roller but a seam ripper got it out easy enough. It doesn't like dark corners, so make sure your rooms are well lit. Its not silent, though not loud either. Quieter than a hair dryer on low. All in all, thus far, definitely worth the money! Cons: rolls up thin/small area rugs & the spinning brushes probably will need replacing often (just my opinion). *** 1 week update *** Still going strong! This thing has paid for itself already in my opinion. I run it twice a day & have used the spot clean function a couple of times for spills. The max function drains the battery considerably faster. If it's too far away from the base when it dies, it has a hard time finding it's way "home" but I just guide it if it's taking a while to get there with the remote. It doesn't get into sharp corners well sometimes, I've been sweeping them out to the open floor and letting the robot get it. (Lazy, but that's what I bought this thing for, right?) I'll update again in a month with final thoughts. So far, so good! ***close enough to 1 month*** So I'm still pretty darn impressed. I've blocked it into specific rooms to make sure it sweeps the entire room at once. It has a crazy pattern & left to do it's thing WILL get the entire room...eventually. I find it easier to block it in each room, then let it go however long it wants in our main living areas. I've left the door open to my bedroom which has 2 steps down & this little guy did fall. He flipped over onto the next step. It seems to still be working just fine, but I don't chance it anymore. I did figure out that to remove hair from the roller brush, you can just pop off the cover & pull it out. That's way easier than a seam ripper! All-in-all y'all, I'd recommend this to anyone & I already have, actually. We're planning on giving one to our parents for Christmas. I have barely touched my broom for almost a month. One less thing for a stay at home mom of 2 young kids & a housewife. It's money well spent! **** 8 months later **** I’ve uploaded a picture to show the problem my husband discovered. Our ILife started getting stuck on everything - the area rugs & nothing at all. We took it apart to clean it (it definitely needed it) and found that one of the wheels wasn’t turning. When he removed the wheel he saw the ground wire was detached. When the iLife would encounter a bump, the wheel has been rubbing against the wires. 3 are frayed & the ground wire has come out completely. I’m not sure if we can fix it. It was good while it lasted but it didn’t even make it a whole year. I’m pretty disappointed. It worked really well until it didn’t. I’m going to contact the company to see what can be done. **Late update & Final thoughts** The company is in China so there was a lot lost in translation in emails. They didn’t quite understand the issue with the wiring but sent two new wheel assemblies and emailed a video on how to replace them. The video didn’t include how to replace the wires. I decided to attempt it anyway & I was successful! It hasn’t worked nearly as well since then. I’m not the most mechanically inclined person so maybe it’s not exactly right, but it does work. I think at this point it’s getting very close to the end of its life. It’s worse at detecting a fall down the stairs, chooses corners it will never go in & gets stuck easily or on nothing at all. All-in-all, I’d say it was worth $200. Next time, I’ll invest more money into a unit that will hopefully last longer. If you’re on a budget & in the market for one of these, this one has been great overall & even with the issues we’ve had, the warranty was honored, the customer service was good & it does what it says it does. ****Final Update 2 years later RIP iLife**** So after the repair I did, it never really worked as well. Now it’s definitely at the end of its life. It will clean for a few feet, back up in a circle then stop & flash red once. I haven’t attempted to contact the company because at this point I’m way outside the warranty period and I’m not confident in whatever I’d have to repair this time. Like I said before, for $200 I wasn’t disappointed. Do I wish it lasted longer? Well of course, I wish it lasted forever! But it was our first foray into robot vacuums and I honestly don’t see our future without one, just not this one. It’s a great budget/beginner vacuum. Can you live without one? Sure. Do you want to? This little robot will answer that for you. It’s a definite NO from me! At the end of the day, you get what you pay for & this was definitely worth it. I’ll spend more this time for a better quality machine. But, I have zero regrets. If you’re on the fence about owning a robot vacuum this is the budget machine you’re looking for. Not so much that you’ll kick yourself for buying it if you think it’s a waste and not much at all when you look at the cost of higher quality machines when you upgrade. You can’t go wrong. Also - just as a disclaimer, I wasn’t paid or compensated for any of these reviews. These are 100% honest and my own opinions.

I got this roomba back in 2017, mostly because I was lazy. I just didn’t want to vacuum but I wanted clean floors. Over the years I’ve never had to because this thing is able to work 24/7 and while this thing isn’t a A+ student in the precision department. (It will wander everywhere) The little guy WILL wander everywhere and through persistent work just clean everything, pull hair, dust and debris I didn’t even see out of god knows where.

It has been doing this since November 2017, and it’s had a good run. It is t dead, no. It “should” be dead, in the years I’ve had to replace the main brush guard twice, the main brush itself three times, the side brushes once or twice each, the battery and finally the left wheel (it gave out recently) and I was able to order replacement parts on amazon for less than 35$ each.

I’ve learned how to (not recommended by the manufacturer) tear this thing down safely and clean it and give it the TLC it needs, it kinda has become the equivalent of an old favorite car or bike that you just know inside and out.

In its current last act it is helping as valiantly as it can to keep the flea population as low as possible (cat decided to bring friends inside and I am working furiously to keep from becoming a snack each time I sleep, putting everything through the washer, and cleaning and spraying (it’s going well). This roomba in its own would pick up a flea (which while it isn’t much in flea numbers just makes me feel more attached to this little guy).

So I decided to get clever, (another process probably not recommended by the manufacturer coming btw) and out some quick drying adult, larvae and flea egg killer that lingers at the bottom of the dust collector.... let it dry and turned it on.

It has been fighting its war in fleas much more effectively. Found two more on its first run and a third on its next. Running it again.

So I recommend you do this? Nope! What I’m saying is this little guy has been going on for several years, has been bumped, battered and had parts broken on it and it is still running. I’ve had manual vacuums last less... and do less, although I’ve had them do more and last longer too. The main benefit of this roomba is that if you get to know it carefully and learn how to replace parts and keep it clean it can be your best friend if you like a clean house and hate bugs!

The reason I am writing this review is because I’m waiting on another roomba (the a9 version of this one). Will I stop using the a4s? Nah, it will just be retired to cleaning my room only while the new kid on the block tackles the whole house.

If you’ve made it this far I fully can recommend this roomba new and from the manufacturer (get it while you can!) and have had absolutely no regrets because this is probably the most sturdy roomba that is keeping a house clean that has three people with long hair, and three cats to keep up with.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Can’t guarentee a quick response (I work like everyone else) but I’ll try and answer when I am able.

To start, this is a great robo-vacuum. I can't even remember how long ago I bought it, maybe five years ago. It has worked great. We're still on the original brushes and battery after running nearly daily for the life of ownership. It's not the most powerful robo-vacuum on the market and it doesn't do great if there is a large step up from hardwood floor to carpet (>0.5"), but for the cost and lifespan, this thing has more than paid for itself with time saved vacuuming.

To note, we have a dog and two young kids. The vacuum runs daily and its bin is filled to the max daily. Point is, it gets a workout and keeps on going. PS - my son (2 years old) loves casing this thing around - great distraction.

    Cons/maintenance:
    - Minor - but - the on/off button on the top of the vacuum is ever so slightly taller than the rest of the unit resulting in the button getting bumped as it passes under some furniture causing the unit to turn itself off. This happens once a week or so.
    - As noted above, this vacuum seems to have issues with hardwood floor to carpet transitions. It'll drive off the edge of the carpet no problem but the front bumper doesn't have the ground clearance to let the unit drive up onto the carpet. We have padding under our carpets so they are taller than usual area rugs (~0.5").
    - maintenance item: clean the sensors! I clean the sensors weekly and it seems to resolve some of the nuisance faults. Be sure to get all of them as there are a number that are hidden/hard to reach.
    - maintenance item: clean the main roller brush, including take the little square rubber mount off the one end to clean the metal spindle. That thing gets super wound with hair causing brush faults.

The only "major" issue I've had is that one of the internal bearings seized a few weeks back (again, after 5 years of use). The bearing is located on the main brush drive so it sees all the fine dust that gets kicked up when running. It's a common bearing size that any DIY-er can source from Grainger (Part # 35JA77). So if you randomly start getting four beep faults (brush fault), check that bearing. $6 later and it's back to running like new.

And not to sound like an old high school shop teacher, but read the manual. Every light and beep the thing makes is telling you something. Makes diagnosing faults much easier/faster and saves you frustration.

    Overall, definitely worth the cost.

December 2023 - still going strong. I think we’re 8 years in at this point and it still works as intended. My son has thrown it and tried to ride it a few times and it keeps going. We did have one of the sweeper motors fail about a month ago but $10 later in Amazon, some soldering, and back in business! Truly the mechanic’s special! Love it! Why spend $1,000 on a Roomba when you can spend $99 on this?!?!

    Get it!

I bought a Roomba 606 before i got this. The 606 worked fine and i was quite happy with its performance till it started acting up after a week or so. No battery charge was it's problem. Returned it and got the iLife A4s although i was skeptical about the brand.
This things works great. Is much much quieter than the Roomba 606, and has a handy remote.Removes more dirt and pet hair (two dogs), than i could ever with a broom. The dogs always bring in loads of dirt and debri and the iLife cleans it up without any problem. Comes with a cleaning brush and two extra rotating sweepers, and opening and emptying out the bin is a snap. well designed and well built for the price. Have not tried it on carpet as don't have one.
Highly recommended given the price and performance.

As a household with two dogs, we are constantly dealing with shedding hair. Having our ilife to take care of this problem for us has been a game changer. We use the vacuum everyday to ensure shedding is not an issue, especially in those stubborn places like the bottom of the stairs and in corners. The mop feature has saved us as well from muddy paws to footprints and has allowed us more time doing what really matters. It is easy to use and clean with little maintenance. As easy as it is to throw the mop pads in the wash I would recommend purchasing additional ones as they get dirty quick, especially if you’re using it every day. We have another name brand robot vacuum and I love that the iLife is a lot quieter than that, allowing us to use it after the kids go to sleep.

Amazing product! I do not like the idea of domestic help as the wages are not regulated and do not know if the prevailing rates are fair. Thus, I clean my apartment on my own. At times, it becomes tough due to extreme work pressure and time constraints. I came across the robot and purchased it. I can tell you that my apartment is always clean now and with almost 20% efforts.
Pros. Effective, programmable, easy to use, easy to clean, quiet operation, has a cute personality:)
    Cons. Nothing

All in all... Full value for money.

    1) Can not save your maps. 2) Has a hard time docking its charging station. 3) It’s suction is not powerful and just all around sucks. 4) You can’t even tell which room it is in because the mapping is just so bad.

Do not buy - save your money and invest in a better one with mapping capabilities.

Here's an idea for the manufacturers. of these little wonderful contraptants, can you please put a multi LED light that would indicate the level of how full the containers are, with maybe a gentle chirping sounds that's unique for when the containers need to be emptied or refilled when it pulls into its parking spot...? Maybe By measuring the pressure level of how much harder the vacuum has to suck as the container fills up and blocks the air flow.
I'm not impressed with the design of the suction intake on the bottom, it's very small and the little rubber guides to supposedly help guide the dirt into the hole get in the way of the too long brushes, (that happened to be a unique kind of brush, compared to just about every other manufacturer out there, so we have to purchase different kind of brush set for it).
As it's going around your house and it seems to prefer certain areas. It might be because it only seems to turn left. I have yet to see it turn right, so if it only has to turn 6 inches to the right, it will go all the way around the whole 300° or so, to get to the 6 inches on the right, instead of just turning the 60°, to get to that spot.
I also find it very poor at getting along the baseboards, and has tenancy (because of the brush wheels being so long), they tend to fling dirt instead of pulling it in to be collected.
