I was excited to get this for my cats. I checked a lot of reviews about this and other wheels, and decided on this one. Because some reviewers indicated that returned or damaged items were being re-sold 'as is,' or the wrong version was sent, I was reluctant to spend the money. It is pretty pricey.
I was very pleased that the item (purchased Sat. 10/12) arrived in three days rather than the original ETA of a week and more. The box it arrived in was beaten up, which scared me, but the contents were very well packed and undamaged.
Prior to buying this, I watched several videos of the unboxing and assembly, so I didn't pay much attention to the instructions that came with the wheel. However, the video I thought was most current was for an earlier version and a lot of improvements have been made to the latest wheel: happily, I got the latest one (gen 5). Unhappily, the instructions were different than the video, and I didn't realize it until I had put the rings and sides together wrong four times.
Once the basic wheel was built, I realized that this version included nicely thought out lock button tabs. So I had to tear it all down once more to insert the button locks. What an improvement over what was shown in the video! The button tab locks really make the structure very strong. It's also makes it easier to snap the pieces in place. (If you read the instructions FIRST).
I wasn't sure my five pound siamese kitten could move the wheel, but he does fine. The wheel moves easily enough and the gen 5 wheels don't make much noise.
I have three indoor cats and they can get pretty crazy running around the house. They love to play 'red'dot' (laser pointer), and they chase it with such ferocity I'm afraid they'll hurt themselves! So my plan is to use the laser and catnip to get them to enjoy running on the wheel. If they don't like it, it's kinda kool art; like the Stargate! Hope it doesn't disappear them!
Day 1, my cats have been exploring the wheel, but are a little nervous when it starts moving. I'm sure they will take to it once they trust it. They are already intrigued by it.
Day 2, WOW! two of my three cats love this thing. I put each of them on the wheel and gently rocked them back and forth while petting them. Then I used a laser pointer to get them going. Once they took that bait, they didn't need the laser to use the wheel. They get on it by themselves - good workouts.
TIp: The sides of the gen 5 wheels may touch the rail, making noise and creating friction. I solved that problem by applying a very light coat of oil to the rail. It's considerably quieter. Be sure that whatever oil you use is non-toxic to cats!

Was hesitant given a lot of the reviews but satisfied...
I was very hesitant given many of the reviews. This is what I have to say... I'm 25... female ... took me about an hour to put this wheel together. It's definitely not easy... but I wouldn't say ridiculously hard. Watch the video they send you... he helps a lots. The hardest part was snapping the center pieces in. The material is cheap. I snapped a middle piece in the wrong direction and had to pull it out. It chipped way too easy. That said... fully assembled it is strong and hold my cats weight just fine. I'm not worried. I was also worried because most of the review and videos show energetic bengals and other cats. I was really worried my cat wouldnt care for it. My cat is almost two and a slightly overweight orange tabby. Indoor house cat. He loves it! He sniffed it the first night... and wasn't interested. But once I showed him how to use it and motivated him with a few treats... he has completely started using it on his own. I've had it three days now. The only other thing to mention is the traction pads. He seems to be doing a number on them quickly...but they are replaceable it looks like and not very expensive. Overall totally worth is if you have a over energetic house cat that likes to expel his energy on you at night instead of letting you sleep. I woke up this morning to a happy passed out kitty.
