Good Kitchen Colander; 5 Quart

Good Kitchen Colander; 5 Quart
Now that I'm retired and cook every night, I decided it's time to have a good colander to drain pasta. My decision was aided by the demise of the old plastic drugstore colander, which developed a crack, then split down the side. I read the reviews here and decided to order this one. I wanted: * stainless steel *handles that are an extension of the colander, rather than riveted or welded *large enough for a full 16 oz box of spaghetti to drain in *sturdy enough not to be dinged or cracked easily Until I read the reviews, I was unsure what kind of base I wanted. I decided to go with the little feet at the base rather than a rim, because others had commented that while a ring at the base for the colander to stand on is perhaps sturdier and steadier, it also provides a place for boiling water to pool, giving the cook an opportunity to scald herself. I knew that if anyone in this whole world is clumsy enough to burn herself making spaghetti, that person is me. Hence, the little black feet. I also looked at the colander sets. Do I need a nesting set of colanders? Not really. I don't drain rice; if you cook rice correctly, it doesn't need to be drained. This colander will be used for pasta and hard-boiled eggs, and that's all. (And if a cook purchases a whole set of colanders, she must also find a place to store them all. No.) I also looked at sizes, with 3 quart and 5 quart appearing most often. I realized I had NO IDEA what size my current colander--the broken plastic one--is. 3 quarts sounded pretty big to me, but then I realized that a whole box of cooked spaghetti, once drained, would probably not fit into a 3 quart saucepan, and so probably also not into a 3 quart colander; I ordered the 5 quart size instead. I am really glad; see the photos attached, which show this colander alongside my old plastic hunk of junk. This colander is actually a bit smaller than the previous one, but it works for us. I took it out of the package, ran it through the dishwasher to sanitize it, then made spaghetti with clam sauce for dinner. Ran it through the dishwasher again--bottom rack was fine--and put it away. The decision was assisted by the brand name. OXO is a good middling brand, not too expensive and reasonably reliable. It's a little pricey, and that's the only reason no fifth star is included, but my hope is that having laid out the money, I won't have to buy another. Based on what I know from one use and two washings, I would buy this colander again.

Before purchasing this colander, I had a very specific list of things I was looking for (and did not yet have) in a colander. I already owned a small aluminum colander and a large stainless steel colander, but I was leery of using aluminum and the stainless steel colander's holes were so big that quite a bit of the spaghetti I was draining would end up in the sink, which is gross. Also, the stainless steel colander had a metal ring that held it up off the sink, but the water would collect in there if I wasn't holding the colander, but the handles would quickly get hot and it became impossible to dump a pot with one hand and hold the colander in the other.

This is what I wanted in a colander, and this is what I got in this colander!

    - Big enough to handle a pound of pasta. (I bought the 5 quart)
    - Made from Stainless Steel, which is sturdy, and safe.
    - Small enough holes that fine pasta will stay in the colander, but big enough that they don't slow down draining.
    - Easy to clean. I can't stand it when the holes in a strainer collect food particles that harden in and become nearly impossible to clean. This hasn't happened at all with this colander. Still looks new!
    - Feet that won't scratch my sink, but will also hold the colander up out of the sink to allow water to drain away, rather than being held under the colander and seeping out slowly.
    - Handles that don't get hot.

I also really like the shape of the colander. It is deeper than some, but has a smaller diameter, which means that it doesn't take up as much space in my cupboard, and it easily nests with other items that I have in my cupboard (popcorn bowl, steamer, salad spinner, etc.). Also, it is big enough to easily handle a pound of pasta, but because of the shape, it doesn't seem like overkill to use this big colander to rinse a few veggies from the garden. This colander has replaced my other two colanders completely. They are now both in my yard sale box, and this gem has become one of my favorite items in my kitchen.

I love OXO products, the brand is always so reliable and durable, and this colander is no different. I thought I wanted a mesh colander but upon looking at other products they looked flimsy and cheap. This colander isn't mesh but it has a lot of holes and drains quickly, I don't have any issues with water collecting on the bottom. The colander is all one piece meaning the handles are not bolted or welded on which is a huge positive in my book (I once had a handle break while draining potatoes). It's made of thick steel so it feels solid and the outside is smooth. After a few trips through the dishwasher there is no rust like there is with other cheap stainless steel products. I bought the 5qt colander and have drained a pot with a whole box of pasta, cleaned a head of lettuce, and drained a pound of green beans, each time the colander has had room to spare. Long story short, this is a high quality product and is worth the purchase!

I've been slowly getting rid of plastic in my kitchen and replacing it with cast iron, stainless and glass items. So when my 20 year old plastic colander cracked recently, I decided to try this OXO Good Grips Stainless colander.

It came yesterday and I used it to drain pasta last night. I am in love! It sits securely on its little feet, and the rubberized rim means you don't get burned as the metal heats up. There are plenty of holes for draining, and both inside and outside are smoothly finished. Even my old plastic colander was rough on the outside, where the holes were drilled. Not this one!

My only disappointment is that this colander doesn't come in a larger size than 5 quarts. With our large family, I need everything in large sizes.

If you're looking for a great colander - stylish stainless, smoothly finished, convenient handles, large size - this is the one for you!

I've had my 5qt version for about 6 months and I LOVE it! I use it primarily for pasta. I have had no issues of any kind whatsoever. When I prepare pasta for my family, it is always at least 1lb or 16oz. This strainer handles it with ease. I am so happy I switched to stainless steel. I have also had no issues from dishwasher use. I use sanitary settings and extra dry in our LG dishwasher for reference. Another fabulous and very reliable OXO product. Thank you!!!

Love this colander! No stinky grooves or metal part overlaps so very easy to clean, doesn't allow bacteria build-up (unlike some lesser designs) & excellent ergonomics which I've come to expect from OXO in general.

Not saying I'm an OXO fanboy as I've had some duds as well, but overall very happy with them in general.

The drainage holds are sufficiently small for my purposes and I love how the bottom is curved up a bit so the bottom isn't left sitting in water if you put this in the sink for example directly after draining food.

It’s not the cheapest but it’s the best I’ve found. The design & placement of the feet are superior to other similar ones (eg. KitchenAid) — there’s no chance of gunk buildup around them. The holes are big enough to drain well but not so big that spaghetti falls through. Sturdy. Dishwasher safe. Otherwise, it’s a colander — does what it’s supposed to do.

I like the aesthetic appeal and the sturdy feel of this colander as compared to other flimsy strainers I’ve bought previously.
Not only does it look REALLY nice, it has a black edging around it which extends slightly on two sides for easy handling when straining hot foods & four little round ‘feet’ to make it easier to sit on a plate, bowl etc yet still allow water to run through.
Because it is an attractive design it also makes a decent fruit bowl or to use when serving a salad at the table

Lovely little bit of kit but it's insanely expensive for what it is, expected it to be a bit sturdier.

Slightly too small for even a medium portion of veg, and the lack of proper handles means it's almost guaranteed that my hand will be splashed with (usually boiling hot) water.

Definitely not up to the design standard of the rest of the Oxo range.

Wouldn't recommend - hunt for a great colander goes on.
