This is a replacement for my dulled out, ten year old mandolin. This system works well. It is bulky and I cannot store it in my kitchen gadget drawer. I store it on the wall for now. It is very sharp and the thickness settings are good for me. After washing you must dry by standing it on the handle because there is an area where water pools. I would recommend this item for your kitchen.

I had a bulky mandolin slicer at one point and it was just a pain in the butt.

    My only knock against it is not with the product itself but how it was initially sent to me. It was actually so ridiculous that it amused me more than angered me, but they totally shipped it with the handle completely broken off and missing (the box didn't even factor in the length of it with the handle, so maybe whoever packed it didn't know it was supposed to have one). But it was easy enough to return and replace it, and I couldn't be happier with the proper one.

    This mandolin is an excellent product. It is very simple yet well made. The blade is very sharp and the the plastic wipes down easily. This is a great slicer to keep stored around, and for the price you cannot go wrong.

    What makes me take a star off this rating are two specific issues. First, the hand guard can be a problem, as the spikes that dig into the item being sliced are very short. Unlike some other guards with longer tines to spear and hold securely what is being sliced, there are only large amounts of very small shallow spikes that do not securely hold anything on their own. You must use at times considerable force in order to keep the thing being sliced in place, and I have found it is often easier to not use the guard, which is of course dangerous.

    The second problem is really not a problem at all. Like many mandolins in this price range, the blade is not removable, which means you will only get one type of slide. The only adjustment is for slice thickness. No dicing or julienne slices here. Not a big problem in this price range, but something to consider.

    All in all, this is a quality product, and it will serve anyone well for years to come.

    I purchased this to replace one I've had for about 6 years. I lost the pusher for my old one and I thought it was time to try a new one and see if the quality was still as good. The new one is even better than the old one. They have added depth markings to the adjustment knob and the plastic depth plate is more sturdy. The blades are extremely sharp and will remain that way, if it holds up like my older one.

    I grab this so often I usually hand wash it because I will need it again so soo, but I have put the old one in the dishwasher hundreds of times with no ill effect. The beauty of this hand-held mandolin is its size and the fact that you can hold it with one hand and quickly slice a few things without having to drag out a full size mandolin and then clean it.

    I highly recommend this product.

    I have had this for 5 years. It is still perfect! I bought one for my mom 3 years ago and she loves hers too. I use it to slice everything from garlic cloves, onions, cucumbers and cabbage to shallots and carrots. I use the thinnest setting for paper thin slices of garlic and the thickest for pickling cucumber slices. For the morons who need instructions, it's a sharp, V shaped blade--use caution and the guard. I too have sliced my fingers many times, but it is because I chose not to use the guard and just used my hands. This is not the fault of the SHARP appliance just as it is not the knife's fault if you cut yourself either.

    Guy Fieri just had a tip on his show and showed someone how to use a fork instead of their bare hand to slice. I plan to try this next time I do garlic. I just let the end pieces go when I use it.

    This is easy to use but it's a bad design. My main complaint is that every slice is either slightly wedge or triangle shaped. The adjustment is on a single pivot/hinge, which combined with the v blade, makes it physically impossible to get flat slices. This is especially problematic with wide veggies/fruits. Say you slice an apple- the edges of the slice will be thin, with a ridge in the middle.

    There are 5 adjustments settings, labeled from 1/32" to 1/4". However due to the issue mentioned above, the measurements are meaningless. Everything will be cut thinner than labeled- the wider the fruit, the worse it is. Cutting an apple on 1/4" gives slices that are more like 1/8" thick on average. I wouldn't recommend this mandoline period, but especially not for slicing larger, harder fruits/veggies. Besides the thickness issues, the wider and harder the fruit, the more likely it is to get caught up and require a lot of effort to force through (and that's how you cut yourself). Speaking of safety, the guide isn't great. Doesn't offer a lot of grip. Really only useful when you get to the last 1-2" (and it's just as easy to use a folded kitchen towel).

    I bought this to consistently slice fruit for a dehydrator, using only on the thickest setting (1/4"). In practice, if the fruit is less than ~1.5" wide, it works well enough (but I wish it sliced to a true 1/4"). You don't notice the high points once it's gone through the dehydrator. The handle is rubber and easy to grip securely. My secondary complaint is the inability to sharpen or replace the blade, so this thing is disposable in a couple years once it dulls.

    Overall would not recommend. I should've bought the Benriner like I was originally thinking.

    Is the blade really sharp? Yes. Can you make thin slices of a variety of vegetables? Yes. So in that I was pleased, and my kids are happy to be eating potato, beetroot and carrot chips.
    But it comes with no instructions whatsoever, even online the information is sketchy. I learnt how to use it by reading up instructions of other brands online. The black hand attachment has come off the vegetable support piece, and I don't know how to put it back on. So for the price I paid, and with the Kitchen Aid brand name... I'm not thrilled.
