- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2017If you want total control over your lighting, as well as the ability to get creative, this is exactly what you need! The colors are vibrant and you can create any ambiance with them. The Philips app offers some nice utilities, such as setting up various routines and even location aware to turn the lights on/off when you enter/leave the house. The system pairs well with Google Home for voice control over basic functions. I've also used IFTTT to create custom voice commands (such as "Go go gadget lights" for our preferred setting or "Red Alert" to turn all the lights red)...not a necessity, but a fun party trick and time saver for frequently used light settings. Philips definitely got it right when they decided to allow 3rd party apps. I've also used On Switch for some additional functions and Hue Camera can create lighting effects during a movie. This system was easy to set up and has endless possibilities, very pleased with it!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2017Hated using my overhead light in my room, because it would hurt my eyes at night when I'm on my bed using the computer and slightly looking up. Also, I don't like having my lights off, because it hurts my eyes when staring at a screen. These lights have solved that since I only use them with lamps, and create beautiful ambient light for any time of day and any brightness. Great quality, great colors & brightness, and work well. Pricey, but the convenience of controlling things how you want it, and through multiple ways (voice, phone app, watch app, tap switch, dimmer switch, and things like IFTTT) are what really make Philips worth it.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2016At first I wasn't sold on the smart light thing. I bought a Google Home with interest in getting into the API, and decided to try Hue, which I had heard about for a while, because Google Home integrates with it. The integration is a bit immature, but that's not what this review is about.
These bulbs draw a little more power than my previous LED A19/E26 bulbs, but the amount is not much. Not enough to care. They are still substantially more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs. The fact that you can tune the white color to your liking means there's no question about which bulbs to get, unlike CFL and normal/non-smart white LED bulbs.
The shape is not A19, though the socket type is E26. Despite not being A19 shape, their size doesn't inhibit their installation. The glass dome is designed such that light radiates in a pattern almost as good as any A19 bulb. There is a dark spot on the socket side that is bigger than a typical A19, but that's not a huge issue.
The color of the generation 3 bulbs are quite rich. They create deep greens, reds, and blues without issue. The colors in between are also quite nice. However, my Google Home doesn't seem to be able to make a good yellow as it looks a sickly green. However, that seems to be an issue with Google Home as I can use the Hue app to generate good yellows.
Using the smart hub is quite easy. With a wired connection, as long as you have a good firewall setup on your internet connection, getting it set up is secure and easy. Pairing devices and apps require physical access to the hub, making it relatively difficult for an external attacker to steal control over it. The app is fairly basic, but there are third party apps that extend the functionality quite a lot. Some are free, some are not. The only extra app I really took to extend functionality was Hue Pro.
While I do love this system and it will likely become even more embedded in my home life, especially with the home assistant integration, it has its flaws. There are two major flaws, one of which I think can be solved, and the other I don't know of a solution that Philips should implement.
Flaw 1: The bulbs have a default on state when given power. When a light switch is flipped on for a bulb, they turn on. If power fails, even if the light was off prior to the power failure, the light will return to on when power is restored. What this means is if you put the bulb in a socket with intention to leave power always applied, if you have unstable power, you might find they randomly turn on. Philips is aware of this and has no solution. They intend to leave it in default on state for emergency purposes. To work around this, for lights where there might be some sensitivity to this problem (ie: bedroom at night), just turn off the socket to prevent it from randomly turning on when it would be inconvenient. To a point, it negates some of the smart features, but you can leave the socket on at other times to get that advantage.
Flaw 2: The lights have a default white state that cannot be modified. Like the default on state, the default white state is for emergency purposes. However, I hate the white color temperature they chose as default. I understand why they would prefer not to return to a previous RGB color state and brightness in case of emergency, but I would love to be able to set the default white color temperature at the very least. I hope Philips implements at least this much control.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2016No longer worry about getting home after dark and stumbling through a dark room looking for a light switch. No need to leave a light on all day either. This system encourages you to be power efficient because it is so easy to do. The LED bulbs themselves offer rich colors in almost limitless variety without suffering from pale colors complained about in previous generations. The system is easy to install but it does take a few minutes to get up and running even after installing the bulbs themselves. It is very responsive to controlling through the app or with Alexa. Obviously with LED technology it will save power over both flourescent and incadescent lights, however I have not noticed a huge difference yet. The cost of the system is a bit of a con, however it is easy to see where the money goes. Due to the additional heat generated by the Wi-Fi radio in each bulb they are not recommended in enclosed fixtures. The app, and indeed the system, seems to be a work in progress. It is perfectly functional and miles ahead of existing technology, however it seems like it is right on the cusp of getting better.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2017I'm a huge tech nerd...and Star Trek fan.
So when I started reading about the Amazon Alexa/Google Home and the integration with Philips Hue lights, I had to try it out. The Hue lights are incredibly overpriced for light bulbs (a point everyone agrees upon), but they are pretty cool. First, setup is a breeze, although the app leaves much to be desired. (There are, however, free options on the Apple Store that are more robust.) The lights - assuming they do not arrive broken - have some heft to them. Color consistency is good - until you attempt to add in older Philips Hue offerings. All is well.
The fun part is creating scripts with ITTT and Scriptify, automating the lights with triggers. Tell the lights what to do when your Alexa alarm goes off. What to do when you turn on the TV to watch a show or a movie (love this!). To turn on when your GPS alerts your network you are close to home or to turn off when you leave. So many cool options.
After 3 days, I decided to buy another couple sets, add LED strips behind the TV and more Amazon Dot Echos. So you can probably tell I'm a fan already. :)
