- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2015If you're new to the series, go pick up Volume One ASAP! This is unlike anything you will ever read, and is ridiculous, bizarre, and thoroughly satisfying. Fiona Staples' artwork is extremely graphic and leaves nothing to the imagination (Chapter 26, male dragon, OMG) and flows perfectly with Vaughn's witty and unique writing style. The plot, though crazy and disturbed, is very, very good; Saga is intricate, fast-paced, and every bit as multilayered as George R. R. Martin's masterpiece. Saga will hook you from the first page and leave you craving for more once you've blown through all five trade paperbacks.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2015Yet again another fantastic addition to the Saga story. I absolutely love this series. It has so many dimensions and characters that make this story so real and deep. I will say that Volume 5 was a little less intense as the previous volumes, but that was bound to happen. I have a feeling volume 6 will be amazing since 5 seems to be kind of a setup/buildup to the next volume. I can't wait to continue this series. I'm so glad I started it and I would recommend it to anyone. Sorry my review is a bit short, but I figure this late in the series people probably know about it by now. I just wanted to say that it was still amazing even if it was less intense as previous volumes. On to the next one!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2023As each volume has gone on and the story and characters unfold and evolve I can't put it down and wanna continue to read. On top of the world class art and story telling I love the little snipets of scribble from Hazel and most of the time what she says is so profound and really hits home, at least with me. I honestly can't say enough great things about SAGA, I thought Brian K. Vaughan's Y:The Last Man Standing was his best work, now bear in mind I HAVE NOT FINISHED SAGA AS IT IS ONGOING AND AM ONLY FINISHED WITH VOLUME 5....BUT, if it keeps on like this, I might have to reexamine that thought cause this is a masterpiece, TO ME THIS IS HOW I FEEL,YOU MIGHT HATE IT,BUT I DOUBT THAT AND THIS IS MY REVIEW. Give it a chance, don't stop after volume 1 and by the time you read volume 2 you'll probably like it and want to keep going. Enjoy, to me this a can't miss.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2022In volume 5 of this exciting and addictive series, Vaughan escalates the pressure on our separated heroes as they dodge mercenaries and continue their intergalactic trek in the hopes of reuniting their family, avoiding temptation, and escaping the seemingly never-ending and senseless interplanetary war. Gimme more!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2015I love this series. I discovered it wen reading a list of the top ten books in the US that are consistently petitioned to be removed from library shelves for whatever reason (usually this reason is religious).
Definitely if you are reading these reviews because you are considering buying this graphic novel, you SHOULD BUY THIS GRAPHIC NOVEL. Start from the beginning. The art is phenomenal, top of the line - just plain breathtaking at times. The story is solid, relate-able on too many levels, and very digestible for even those who aren't generally into comics/graphic novels. Some of the brutality and sex portrayed in the story are shocking to see laid out there, even if you are expecting it, so try to prepare yourself with an open mind. This story is graphic, and doesn't shy away from the icky stuff.
This particular installment in the series was hard to rate for me. A quick read, as usual - I finished it in a matter of an hour or less. It was good because I was so ravenous for the next part of the story, the continuation of all the great characters, but it is bad because there is hardly a positive moment anywhere to be found in this set of chapters. While the story is consistently well-written, the stoyLINE seems to be just getting worse and worse for the characters. And if you're overly attached to any one in particular, it is best to adopt a Walking Dead/Game of Thrones attitude toward that character, in order to fend off future sorrow and heartbreak. Very few people have plot armor, and no one seems to have any sort of good luck whatsoever.
Prepare yourself.
I'll be here waiting for volume 6 if you need me.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2015What attracted me first was the stark but expressive artwork. The beleaguered couple, having and raising their child on the run - handled at all well, there's plenty to pull a reader into their plight and plenty of room for the story to grow. This has been handled very well.
Now, in this fifth collection of monthly comics, that early promise is still being kept.If anything, the tension just keeps getting stronger, disaster even closer. The authors have a knack for pacing. And, in an ongoing epic like this, that means managing the cast of characters. We've lost a few along the way, but gained a few also. Only a few, not so many that you'll lose track of who's who, and with enough mixed loyalties to keep the reader guessing.
Two more things keep a long-lived series alive. First, the open invitation to new readers. Jumping into the middle of a story can be tough for a first-timer, but this makes it easy to dive in without tedious (or at least obvious) recaps every few issues. Second, there's sequel slump - specifically, the lack of sequel slump. It's easy and distressingly common for a series to fall into a rut, or to lose the vitality of script and art that pulled me in initially. As yet, that remains in the future for the Saga saga - and I hope it's the very far future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saga - Vol. 5

5.0 out of 5 stars Always awesome
after book 4 I was afraid the comic was losing steam. No way: it's always awesome. Can't wait for the next one!
