Well, I finally bit the bullet and went for a 4K TV... And I really do like this one. After a few days of use I have had no issues and really like the picture quality (For the price point) and of course the Roku built in is a huge bonus. I will be adding more detail in a video review soon, but wanted to get my thoughts down now. Pros: Price, Starting at Sub $500 for the 43 in model this is a great deal for a 4K TV let alone a Roku 4K TV Build Quality, Despite being plastic all around it is well put together and doesn't look cheap Picture quality (More specifics on this later as this is both a pro and a con) Roku Functionality, This works as well as all the other Roku boxes I have in my house. Ability to describe inputs and use individual picture settings for each input Cons: Picture Quality controls (Very limited options to control how the picture looks) Only 60Hz real refresh rate (This does allow some blur in very fast moving pictures, but enabling game mode helps a lot) Can only choose from their generic input descriptions (Not really a con but would have been nice Ok so all in all I feel this TV is a good option for a budget price 4K TV or even just a Roku TV in general.and the Pros on this unit definitely outweigh the Cons. I replaced a Vizio 1080p Model that had massive software and hardware problems and this is night and day. I actually contacted TCL support prior to purchasing this model to see how responsive they would be and they were very fast (less than 24 hours via email) which given my experience with even more high end TV manufacturers is really good. I would absolutely recommend this TV to anyone who is looking for decent 4K at budget price. Just my thoughts, AK

TCL 50UP130 50-Inch 4K Ultra HD Roku Smart LED TV (2016 Model)

I liked my TCL 50-inch. It was 4k, it fit in my mantel perfectly, and it had a nice price. However, that price came with a serious cost. Just over one year later of normal, regular use, my television burned a hole in the left corner while I was watching a football game. The TV made a loud, popping sound, and then began to spark out of that small hole. My roommate and I got up to check on the TV. It was so hot that we both burned our hands when we touched it. Simply put, this product is not only unreliable, but it is also a hazard to your home.

I then contacted the lovely (sarcasm) customer service representatives at TCL. They were, without a doubt, the absolute rudest, foot-dragging customer service reps I've ever had the displeasure to interact with. However, I held out hope that they would pull through. Two representatives described my situation as a "serious safety hazard." My one year warranty was expired; yet, the representatives assured me that the nature of my television's untimely demise qualified me for an exemption to the warranty.

I agreed with the reps wholeheartedly. My TV didn't just stop working. Instead, it got so hot that, without my help, it burned a whole through its own screen. Had I not been home to unplug the television, it could have started a fire. But of course, my hope was placed in vain. Weeks later I received a curt, straightforward email that there was nothing they could do for me. After a heated conversation with one of their representatives, the joker even had the audacity to say "I hope you do business with us in the future." I can tell you assuredly that, no, Mr. TCL rep. . .I will not.

I understood the risks of buying a TV from a Chinese company with sub-par products and a poor customer service history. Due to the nature of my work (law), I'm very familiar with the phrase "caveat emptor" which means "buyer beware." And that's exactly what I'm cautioning you to do today: BEWARE. There's nothing I can do about my financial loss in this television. If I hadn't been home and my house had caught on fire. . .well, that's a different story. However, you CAN prevent the hassle and loss that I experienced. DO NOT BUY THIS TELEVISION OR ANY OTHER TCL PRODUCT. based on my experience, this is a garbage company that sells garbage products at a low cost and then expects you to simply shell out a few hundred more dollars when they inevitably break (or almost start a fire).

Below I've attached a photo of the small hole so you can see exactly how hot this television got (enough to burn a hole in the screen).

Update: After trying to fix it twice, TCL took the TV back and issued a refund. I ordered a Fire TV on prime day for $60 less and 5" bigger. Been working like a champ. Sorry TCL, I really wanted to like it.

The picture is good for the price point. I watched a movie in 4K (via Netflix) and while the quality was good, I don't see why anyone would spend more then this price for a 4k TV. It's not worth it when it's only a little better then 1080p. I think overall, with this TV, you get good value for your money but... The remote is driving me insane. I almost always use the remote headphone jack while watching TV. My hearing is not great, so this allows me to hear the whispers or mummers without having to crank up the volume and bother the neighbors. The only problem is, every 15 minutes or so, the sound cuts out. I've tried different headphones and had the same issue. These are the same headphones I used on my Roku 3 remote and that worked perfectly. I am not sure what the deal is. During the few times i watched without headphones, I didn't notice the issue. The could be a clue that the remote is the issue or just dumb luck. The TV has rebooted on me twice in the month I've had it. My Roku 3 would do that every now and then. As one guy stated, the big clue is the sound will go out and the remote will not respond. About 10 seconds later it reboots. Annoying, but it's tolerable considering I only spent $480 for a 50" 4K smart TV. I really like the Roku platform. It's fast and easy to navigate. I have a Tivo but for some reason, the streaming apps take forever to load, but that could be because it's an older model. That's way I always used my Roku for streaming. I was really excited about getting this because I could have one less external device, and better picture quality. It's just the stupid sound issue that is keeping me from giving it five stars. Oh and the display went crazy a couple times, but it was brief, and has not happened in awhile. I don't know if it has anything to do with the power strip or maybe a bad HDMI cable. Could be just about anything. Since it's rare, I am not going to make a fuss over it.
