Lost filter cap, bought a whole new aeropress. Still happy!

Lost filter cap, bought a whole new aeropress. Still happy!
So, first things first, I bought my first aeropress back in 2006. And was using it (while traveling) until late 2019 when I misplaced the filter cap. This spring, I finally broke down and bought another set (with a travel bag). I'm pleased to say the product is as good as ever. But want to make a couple observations... 1. You can buy a filter cap from the aeropress store online (if it was open — it's not due to covid). You don't have to replace the whole thing. You can also find them at higher prices on an auction site. But you'll still need to wait weeks for delivery. 2. I bought the one with the travel bag this time. And if I were to do it again, I'd save a few dollars and skip the bag. It's just a super cheap nylon bag. Which would suffice. But it's also small enough that it doesn't make packing everything into it very easy. If it was just a little larger, it would be more practical. But, unlike the aeropress, it is also made of super cheap materials. I wouldn't count on it to hold up to much wear and tear. But the aeropress? It's amazing. And I will forever be a fan. Just wish the online store was open. Or else I would've just replaced the filter cap. But hey, when it opens, I will. And then I'll have a backup aeropress.

I like to make my coffee one cup at a time, giving it my full attention, enjoying all the particulars. I don't like coffee that has been sitting on a burner, I like it freshly brewed. That said, sometimes I like it strong, sometimes I like it smoother, sometimes I like it with lots of caffeine, sometimes half-caff, and other times with none. It depends on my mood and the circumstances.

I prefer things that are simple, direct, and manual. I enjoy taking the time to focus on what I'm doing to give myself a small break and to tailor the results. Think of making omelettes, one at a time, and giving it your full attention. This coffee maker is wonderful for that sort of approach. Too strong? Use fewer grounds, shorter brew time, or cooler water. Too weak, user more grounds, longer brew time, hotter water. Mix decaff and regular beans in the proportion that suits you right now. The instructions are just a starting point.

I usually use boiling water, half a scoop of grounds or less, give it a slow stir, wait a while, press, then add hot water to bring it up to a medium-sized mug full, but I can change it up to suit making it as strong or weak as I like -- and if it isn't far enough in the direction I want to go, I can always switch to another coffee bean. I bought one set, and after a few tries got superb coffee, so I got a second set for the office. I use the paper filter for quick convenience at work because it is easier to clean, and a metal filter when I'm taking more time at home and want to preserve the oils. I love the fact that the parts feel really solid and sturdy - I hate flimsy tools. The funnel does seem a bit overly clunky, but no one says you have to use it. The bag is odd, because all the items don't fit easily in it, but nevertheless, add a Hario hand-crank grinder, a small water heater, and some quality beans and you have absolutely first rate coffee available in a travel kit. If I'm in a rush, this device can get the very best out of pre-ground coffee.

It won't do it for you, though; you need to take time and enjoy tinkering and tweaking the process. If you want large quantities, fast, automatic, or effortless coffee, then this is not for you. But if you enjoy taking time to make carefully crafted, artisinal, mindful, small batches then this is a wonderfully simple toolkit. Try it, seek out freshly roasted beans, a quality burr grinder, and then play with the different variations. More or less caffeine (you can always mix beans or grounds to hit the caffeine level you want), you can also mix different types of beans to make a custom blend, try coarser or finer grind, greater or lesser quantity of grounds, paper or metal filter, hotter or cooler water, shorter or longer brew time, different approaches to stirring, straight or diluted results. Oh, and don't forget to pre-heat the coffee cup, unless you find that not doing so absorbes just the right amout of heat - it would depend on the individual cup. This is not a coffee maker that does the job for you--don't expect to get it right the first time; you need to try different things, think about what you are doing and make adjustments. The payoff is that as you do that you acquire the ability to obtain very different results from the same beans--to suite different tastes, moods, circumstances, and needs, and also to vary your process to suite different beans. There is no one right way. You can take the mad scientist approach if you want, weighing and timing every step, or just stay aware of what you are doing and trust that your intuition will become finely honed. I prefer the second approach, but I'm not trying to make a commercial product that needs to be reproducable.

There are plenty of YouTubes on this device, and it seems there are barrista competitions using it. One trick I learned is to use the thing upsidedown. This solved the main complaint I had, which is that the water starts dripping through the filter immediately, when I am stirring the gounds. Remove the filter holder if it is on, put the plunger in, turn it upsidedown, add grounds and water, and you can stir and steep it for a long as you like, then put the filter on, put the mug over the top (upsidedown) and flip it all over so the mug is on the bottom and the plunger is ready to press down. Look at the YouTubes if you need clarification. I thought the idea was bizarre until I tried it, and then I realized that this is the best way to have control, and have been using it ever since.

This device distills the brewing process and gives great control for the coffee tinkerer. Nothing difficult here -- it is not rocket science, and it is lots of fun for those who enjoy variety.

I've used this daily...sometimes more...I do it the inverted method...Just easiest, cleanest and makes the most sense to me...There are MANY vids out there about this method and brew stats. I use the paper filters. Wash them with the boiled water into my coffee receptacle. OXO thermal cup and lid MAYBE (memory) 24 ounce size.
    My way:
    - Inverted with the plunger seated to just watertight and stable.
    - Preheat the AEROPRESS with just off the boil water ~ 212 degrees F. This will preheat the AEROPRESS to the best I can.
    - Then I pour the boiled water thru the filter into my OXO thus cleaning filter and pre-warm OXO.
    - One scoop of beans into CAPRESSO burr grinder. Playing with the grind size, pretty much use a fine grind
    - I, then, dump the pre-warming water from inverted AEROPRESS.
    - Use the funnel to pour the ground coffee without spilling grounds. Aeropress is very stable.
    - Set timer for 2 minutes
    - Fill with the boiled water. Then water is ~ 205 degrees F.
    - Start the timer
    - Stir the wetted grounds
    - Fill the AEROPRESS to top with remaining boiled water. Temp unknown...Space is lessened by absorption of water by grounds.
    - Put the washed filter onto AEROPRESS.
    - dump the pre-warming, filter wash, water from OXO
    - Timer beeps. I invert AEROPRESS onto OXO and plunge slowly; ~ 15 seconds...which is longer than you may think.
    - Stop plunge when hiss is heard
    - Retract plunger to create a wee vacuum. Helps prevent dripping.
    - Remove filter cap.
    - Rinse filter cap and put in drainer.
    - Toss filter paper out.
    - Plunge grounds into container. Put grounds in fridge for odor removal
    - Dismantle and wash out AEROPRESS with cold tap water. Don't want grounds in my drink.
    - Re-fit AEROPRESS in original configuration from above.
    - Fill with remaining boiled water...Temp unknown...Still mighty HOT
    - Pour the water filled AEROPRESS into the OXO
    - DRINK! Enjoy!
I get, surprisingly, consistent (and DARN GOOD) results because of my pace and timing.
Why do I do this inverted? Keeps the water in contact with the grounds for my specified time. Nothing dripping through
Inverted best allows me to preheat the AEROPRESS, Wash the filter and use the same wash water to preheat the OXO.
May be much ado about nothing...Works for me...
    In the future:
I will be trying a pinch of salt on top of my freshly ground coffee. Possibly this removes any bitterness.
I'll try different grind size....and then different steep times
I will get a digital scale, with TARE, to weigh the ground coffee and water. Scale will be sized to accommodate my AEROPRESS, ground coffee and water. I'll start with the coffee/water weights recommended round the web.

The AEROPRESS is holding up. Looks as new. No crazing or cracks.
I've read reviews that say the rubber loses form. I store the plunger so the rubber is NOT compressed. Can be done as separate pieces or as one piece with the rubber plunger protruding from the cylinder; this makes for easy packing
The tote bag seems flimsy. I don't expect long life from it. Zipper seems to be weak link. Hindsight has me thinking I'd order the kit with the extra filters..There are, at least, two AEROPRESS kits on AMAZON. One is mine and another removes the tote bag and gives more filters. I'd get another fine mesh bag to transport the AEROPRESS and tools.
I think the kit without tote bag and with LOTS of filters was a less $ kit. (but I'm always wrong) hahaha
I've traveled with it and it transports well.
I use the scoop, funnel, stirrer (works VERY well and better than a spoon) and filter holder. I don't transport the AEROPRESS with the holder. Filters are loose in the bag.
I was thinking about the disc to replace the paper filters but I've read that there are teeny tiny grounds that escape the metal disc filter.
I'll save the ~ $16 and put it toward paper filters.
If you've read all this; you are really interested in the AEROPRESS. Just go ahead....get it.
    A REALLY FINE BREWER!

Wait! I'm adding to this review...I'm PRETTY SURE that it does NOT make espresso...I'll not even try...I get good feax espresso from a MOKA pot...

As a beginner leveling up from cheap instant coffee, this definitely lives up to the hype in my opinion; and so I can't recommend this enough! A quick and reliable way to make a good cup of coffee.

One minor gripe was that I got the manual for the Go version which was a bit strange and unexpected; but otherwise all is well and I'm happy with my purchase.
