What is an unlocked phone?
An unlocked phone is a device that is not bound to any carrier or plan. It allows you to choose your phone first and your carrier second. Upon selecting a plan, simply insert the compatible carrier's SIM card into the phone and you're ready to go. If you decide you want to change carriers down the road or want to take an international trip, it's as simple as replacing your existing SIM card with a new SIM and activating your new plan.
What are the benefits of an unlocked phone?
Freedom: Choose the carrier with the best service or price. If you find a better deal later, you have the ability to change to a different carrier.
Travel: Take your phone internationally and use the carrier of your choice. It's as easy as inserting an active SIM card.
Selection: Choose the phone with the features you want, whether or not your carrier sells it, and get more service options without a contract.
How do I set up my unlocked phone?
The first thing you’ll need is a SIM card for your desired carrier. When activated, the SIM card will let your phone connect to your carrier’s network. If you decide to upgrade to a newer unlocked phone in the future, you can easily remove the SIM card from your old phone and put it in your new phone—just make sure you get the right size of SIM card (nano, micro, or standard) for your phone. If you want to use your phone while traveling internationally, you can easily buy a SIM card for a carrier that operates where you’re traveling. As long as it’s activated, you can just swap SIM cards when you arrive at your destination.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2017I've had this phone for about a month, and I am incredibly pleased with it thus far. My LG G3 died on me, so I picked up this phone because of the reasonable specs at a very good price. Throughout this review, I am comparing this Moto G4 to my previous phone, an LG G3.
Lockscreen Ads:
The most obvious caveat of this phone is the lockscreen ads. They are pretty non-intrusive, and only bring you to the product if you double tap on them on the lock screen. I have only done that once, simply to figure out how the ads work. You can get rid of the ads at any time by simply paying Amazon $50, the amount that you save by buying this phone at the Prime exclusive deal.
Display:
The display is quite good. Accurate, but vibrant colors and a good 1080p60 screen make this phone very good to use. The colors on the phone are comparable to what I see on my Macbook Pro, so I call that good enough for me. More technical users can give you statistics and other numbers such as Adobe RGB coverage and such, but my eye test says that they are very good. There are also two display modes: 'vibrant' and 'standard'. I use the vibrant setting, because the increased saturation is not troublesome to me.
Overall Performance:
The specs of the phone are also quite good. Obviously a superphone like an LG G5, OnePlus 3, or a Samsung Galaxy S7 or S8 is going to be much more powerful, but at an unlocked price of 5 times more expensive. I've been wanting to play a more demanding game like XCOM: Enemy Unknown to truly test it out, but I haven't found the funds to get it yet. I might update this later with my results. However, what anecdotal evidence I can provide is that Ascension (a card game) crashes a LOT less often than it did on my LG G3. In fact, I may have had it only crash once or twice. That may be due to the game running at 1080p on this rather than 1440p on the G3 and/or the G3's heating issues. Overall, I am impressed with the zippyness of the phone. I didn't quite like the standard UI, so I use Nova Launcher Prime (I bought the full version), and the phone is running perfectly.
Battery:
The battery life is way better than the LG G3 that I was used to. Most likely due to this phone's 1080p screen rather than the G3's 1440p screen. I can get through a full day of light use with no problems. I can probably get about 5 hours of heavy use such as gaming, YouTube, Twitch, and/or constant social media.
Pictures:
Overall, I think the camera on the G3 was marginally better, but not really by much. Perhaps it's the button placement on the G3 that reduces jitters, or whatever have you, but in my experience, this phone doesn't take exceptional pictures unless you're extremely stable. At which point, then this phone delivers. What I do appreciate is that the phone has a "professional mode" where you can adjust aperture, focus, and other optical things that a normal digital camera would have access to. I'm not a camera expert, but there seems to be quite a bit of flexibility. One thing that I truly appreciate is a simple slider to adjust brightness. That little thing goes a LONG way, and really helps a ton.
Video Recording:
However, the video recording of this phone certainly leaves something to be desired compared to the G3. With the LG G3, I could record in 2160p30 (INCREDIBLE), 1080p30, 720p60, and 720p120 for the high speed option. With this phone, my options are 1080p30, 720p30, 480p30, and 540p120. Hardly a comparison. If there was a 720p60 option, that would help immensely, but no such luck.
Conclusion:
Overall, I'd 100% recommend this phone. It has great specs, solid battery life, a good screen, and a very decent camera, all at a very good price. And remember that at any time, you can pay Amazon $50 to get rid of the lockscreen ads.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2025Got it as a quick replacement phone for my mom and she found it easy and convenient to use. Worked great and she was happy with it till she lost it on a flight during a vacation trip.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2016If you're in the market for a budget phone you really can't beat this one. I was debating between this and a Nexus 5X for around $250, and also hoping the Moto X Pure would drop to around $200-$250. Once I saw the Amazon deal on the Moto G I snatched it up for $125. I'm pretty happy, but it's not without fault.
First off - I like the simple look of the phone. If you're swayed by shiny metal hardware, you're probably not looking at this phone anyway. Put a case on it and forget about it.
The 5.5" screen is big change for me. My previous phone was a 1st Gen Moto G and only had a 4" screen. I'm still getting used to it, but I think I would prefer a 5" screen. I'm 6'3" and have big hands, but I can't comfortably reach all corners of the screen when using one hand. Maybe I'll get used to it over time. I will say the screen is nice for watching videos. The screen quality is clearly not as good as my wife's iPhone, but I wouldn't expect it to be.
The processor is really solid. Not as fast as the 808 processor in the 5x or Pure, but the 6XX processor is a big upgrade from the previous G Models. I don't play any taxing games, or do an VR stuff so I'm probably not the right person to review processor capability, but I have experienced no lag whatsoever and the OS is very zippy when opening apps. My daughter plays temple run and minion rush and both games load quickly and play seamlessly (a big upgrade over my previous phone).
Some reviews have complained that it only has 1 speaker, but it's a really loud one. I was pleasantly surprised by it. My wife and I were going to get a bluetooth speaker for the kitchen so we could listen to NPR podcasts while cooking, cleaning up or playing a boardgame. No need now. This speaker is plenty loud, and the quality is fine for a podcast.
The only negative so far is the camera. It is surprisingly poor. I don't expect it to rival the iPhone or Galaxy S7, but I would expect it to be better than my Moto G1, which it is not. When it takes a clear photo it's great. The problem is that it rarely does that. Most photos are grainy and out of focus. I think the problem is related to software because it seems to go nuts trying to autofocus. I'll play with the settings and update if it helps. I really want to stress this though. The CAMERA TRULY SUCKS. It's not a big motivator for me, but if it is for you, you might want to think twice about purchasing this phone.
The Amazon Ads have been truly benign. I don't even notice them, and they are totally worth the $50 discount on this phone. Seriously, I think Amazon needs to do a better job with it's targeted advertising. It keeps displaying ads for dog food and whey powder. I DON'T HAVE A DOG AND I'M A VEGAN!!! Surely they could figure that out from my purchasing history.
Anyway, for $125 (I got the extra $25 promotion as well) this phone is a great deal. Aside from the camera, I'm happy with everything about it. Everyone who looks at it is amazed that you can get a solid phone for so cheap. There are a handful of other cheap phones out there, but not with the Moto (Lenovo) name behind it.
***Update 8/10****
So, the camera complaint really only applies to HDR mode. If I leave the HDR option off, pictures turn out great. If I want to take an HDR picture I need a good 3 seconds of absolute stillness for the pic to turnout. These means it can't be used on my kids...EVER.
