This is a simple and easy to use thermometer that does exactly what it says. I received the package soon after I ordered it and it was packaged well enough to keep it safe during shipping. There was nothing glamorous about the packaging and as a matter of fact it was quite plain and factory-ish. But, for the price I wasn't expecting gold trimmed anything.
So, I wiped it gently with a sponge and soapy water being careful not to over-saturate it. I also wiped down the probe in the same way. Then, as this part touches food a lot, I wiped the probe again with an alcohol pad so it to sterilize it as some manufacturers in other countries may not be as hygienic as I would like them to be. After making certain I had cleaned it as well as possible I was ready to try it out.
The casing seemed somewhat flimsy in my hand but I am a larger man with largish hands and grip most things stronger than I should most times. The buttons push easily and have not stuck or depressed after a few uses. I unfurled the probe and stuck it into the meat I was preparing to eat and it started counting up in the digital read out. The numbers are easy for me to read even without glasses though any smaller and I would have trouble reading the read out with my current ocular situation.
It took quite some time for the numbers to increase to the temp of the meat. I have been use to other gauges in professional kitchens that react rather instantly so the wait time was a little off for me. It took about 15 seconds or so for the read out to read the correct temp, I gauged it on an old one I had tired of using and they matched. (So, it was nice knowing it was calibrated correctly from delivery point.) After removing it from the meat it took less time to reach the room temp read out than it had when I read the internal temp of the meat I was cooking. I was puzzled by that but not so much as to make it affect my rating. I turned off the read out then I wiped the probe with a damp sponge and then used an alcohol wipe to sterilize it before stowing it away. The next time I used it the read out came up directly and it worked just as described above. I have used it maybe a half a dozen times at this point and like results every time.
This is my out of the box review and will check in again after about 6 months, or so depending on schedules to update this review. Hope it helps!

Battery compartment was easily opened. Power on when probe is extended is a handy feature. Temperature reading is efficient and having the correct meat temperature printed on thermometer is very convenient. It's easy to use and construction is acceptable at this price point. Checking temperature of roast in cock pot... Instant no brainer

This product worked well for the first few months. We didn't use it for a while, but during a warm spell recently we tried it to test meat temperature. It did not work. My husband changed batteries. It did not work. The little buttons on the front appear to be malfunctioning. I sent an email through amazon.com to the manufacturer and have not had a reply though it's been over a week. It's not the world's most expensive thermometer, but I have a smaller, even less expensive thermometer which has performed flawlessly for years with only one battery change. Both were kept in the same utensil divider. I am disappointed in the product, but I am totally peeved that I did not have a response from the manufacturer. I'll never buy anything by Wilker again.

As a thermometer, this works really well. I like the fact that extending the thermometer probe turns the device on and closing it turns it off...really simple to operate. Easily a 4-5 star product on the thermometer side. However, the big downfall of this product is the internal magnet...it's in there so you can throw it up on the fridge or any other magnetic surface for storage. But...the magnet is so weak that it barely holds itself up. So most of the time it ends up sliding down to the bottom of the fridge after a few openings and closings, or otherwise falling off all together. Seems like this would have come up in product testing. I guess I could just throw it in a drawer and be done with it, but since I bought it because of the magnetic feature, it would be nice if that worked better.

Only downside is the clasp holding the probe in the closed position isn't very tight. Mine always springs back out, but that doesn't hurt anything.
