I couldn’t decide between the corded Hyrovac and the corded Bissell Crosswave until I saw a head-to-head comparison video of the two on Vacuum Wars. The key points that swayed my decision to the Hydrovac were the much easier filter cleaning, the easier self-cleaning, the better/smoother swivel action, and the fact that, despite less raw power, the effective cleaning ability was a draw between the two. Add to that the much lower price for the Hydrovac and the decision was easy.
So far I’ve been very pleased with this. It’s easy to use, does a very nice job on tile floors, and is easy to maintain. The cons for me are mostly along the lines of build quality issues. For example, the filter holder is not all that sturdy, so you need to take care when opening it to not break the plastic tabs. But, I have two other Shark vacs, and while they both have some less than ideal build quality issues, neither has failed on me yet. So I’m hoping for an equally long life from this Hydrovac.
You can use other cleaners in this provided they are low/no suds. The Shark cleaner works well, but it’s quite pricey. There are other equally good cleaners from Hoover, Bissell and commercial cleaners (such as Ludmark) that cost less per use and work just fine in the Hydrovac. You don’t want to use an acidic cleaner (such as vinegar) or any cleaner that has suds since those will damage the water pump in the Hydrovac.
It’s well worth picking up a spare set of filters and rollers. While the roller gets pretty well cleaned in the self-clean cycle, it’s still worth giving it a good hand wash. Plus, it’s not recommended to store the machine with a wet roller or wet filter to prevent mold/mildew. If you have spares you can swap out the wet ones for dry ones, and let the wet ones air dry.
The Hydrovac has cut down on my cleaning time without any decrease in how clean the floors get. That’s worth five stars in my book!

excellent hardwood floored house appliance
I love this thing. ive had it about a month now since moving to a house that is entirely hardwood, tile and laminate flooring. I have a husky a jack Russell and a calico cat and this thing will vacuum the pet hair along with the other debris that accumulates naturally on a floor. The dirty water collector does need rinsed after about 10 minutes because the hair will tell the internal sensor the tank is full but i dont feel inconvenienced by that considering how easy it is to do. the floors dry within few minutes and if you are careful to use the proper proportions of cleaner water and disinfectant there are no issues with streaking even after more than several uses. the manufacturers manual does say that you should replace the roller brush every 6 months. it also says you should only use their version of cleaner but i have been using my own. the self cleaning does a decent job rinsing the roller and cleaning the unit but after every use i pull it apart and rinse each part separately. again the pet hair makes this a necessity for me. i also wipe down the unit on the inside of the roller brush housing after every use to keep the sensor from being confused by the hair. the unit will run for a half hour and does require empties and refills during use if used for that long. the number of passes you make on the floor will determine the number of empty and refills you will need but i will cover about 240 square feet (2 rooms at 10 ft by 12 ft) with a quick mop before and emtpy and refill is needed. if i do more of a deep wash so to speak i need to empty refill after a single room at that size. it is easy to operate. it has really only two control buttons on unit aside from the buttons used to disassemble it. an on off and a floor mode button. the on off also toggles the unit into self clean while it is on the floor station it comes with that charges it. now because my unit is still very new it runs for a decent amount of time i cannot speak to the total amount of runtime before a dead battery as of now. but it will easily do 30 minutes on a single charge. it takes about 4 hours to recharge fully. I have also not used my unit on carpet yet so i cannot speak to how well it does but i am very satisfied with this product as an addition to my home.
