This is awesome. I owned a Roomva iRobot for the last two years. The kicker with them was when I needed customer service over a dust bin in the unit, and i was 1 week out of warranty/return for it because I bought it, put it aside until I really needed it, and when I finally instaled it, found it to be the wrong item. They told me to buy a new one of the right one and to bug off otherwise. iRobot's cleaning power was also substandard, mine being a pet vac, that left pet hair all over the corners of the room. So, I've had 2 years experience with a robot vac.
The Narwal cleans most excellently. Once in a while a piece of hair will get stuck in the back wheel and come off when it is travelling back and forth, but otherwise, perfect. The robot auto-detects floor type, changing from mopping to not (and raising the mops) when moving to a carpet. Setting room areas and types is very simple. It has settings for tile, hardwood and carpet, as well as general (it figures it out). You can set no-go zones very easily. You can even define a room as a pass-thru to get from one room to another that you are mopping, but the room in middle you don't want dealt with.
It detects obstacles so well. One time my son was in its way as it was on it's way to a room to clean and he wasn't going to move. It stopped about 9-12 inches away from him, then took a path around him. The Roomba would always be bumping into walls and furnature (softly, but still) to determine the extent of a room, but he Narwall has built-in optics and can detect obstacles before it hits them. So it doesn't bump the walls and furnature, but gets right up close to vacuum or mop the edges with accuracy. And even here, when it mops at the edges of a wall, it has a mode to move, swivel, move so that the mop brushes get right up the edge and clean very, very well.
It also detects if an area is extra dirty, for which it will mop that area/room 2x, 3x even 4x (if this is the fist time for a really dirty area -- say a bathroom or laundry). After it mops so many square feet, or after a room (settable featured) the Narwal will go back and wash the mop heads to avoid cross-contamination of the dirt (very useful if coming from a bathroom, if you know what I mean).
When complete, it cleans its mops and dries them. Sound can be set to quiet (takes longer) or strong (quicker, but louder) -- and at any level is not all that loud (compared to the Roomba emptying its dirt bin every 10 minutes with a 99 db vacuum!!).
Yes, this is a $1,000 unit, and I had to think a few times before spending that much. But it is worth every penny. My only work is in keeping the dirty water disposed of, and the clean water bin full. (If you set the robot on room mode -- washing mop heads by room -- then it isn't that bad; leave it by area (smaller) and you will need to be present as the water likely will run out in the middle of the total task).
So, that's my 1 week estimate. I'll come back in a few months to confirm or deny my initial findings. Right now: I love this thing!!
Pros:
- Solid suction and mopping performance with low noise. The dirt in the dirty water tank shows how well the mopping is compared to my previous robot with no spinning or vibration on the mop.
- Low maintenance. The brush is truly not tangling ANY hairs (two girls at home but no pets). The throw-away dust bag lasts 3 weeks for me and is a reasonable alternative to the other products with a large dust collection box.
- Doesn't have cameras like the most expensive ones. No privacy concern.
- Product and app looks neat. Didn't have any issue setting it up. Properly notifies about situations such as clean water running out or dirty water tank being full.
Cons:
- When the dust bin is close to full there seems to be a chance that some dirt comes out when the robot goes in or out of the station.
- Still a bit expensive if you don't have any discounts.
Setup was super easy - no problems with WiFi (Google WiFi mesh) or the iOS app. Mapping of our house was super quick and really fun to watch.
The robot cleans surprisingly quickly with very little bumping into things. It's also extremely quiet - I can easily work while it's cleaning (unlike the iRobot). It also cleans very thoroughly (we have a long hair cat...). The mopping performance is particularly impressive. Our house is all tile and hardwood, and one of the rooms has older tile that is hard to clean - it has not looked this good in many years.
There were a couple of areas where it could get stuck - the litter mat and pet food tray, in particular. But those were very easy to designate as no-go zones. On rare occasion it gets stuck under a kitchen chair and needs a quick assist.
It does a really good job of working around obstacles (including a sleeping cat), though it will still attempt to consume things like shoe laces. When that happens, it is remarkably easy to clear with the no-tangle brush head. No need to disassemble like with the iRobot.
Maintenance is pretty easy with the app providing polite reminders - change out the water every couple days, change the filter bag when it asks, and give it a general wipe down every once in a while (it also asks for this).
This robot works extremely well, is quiet and easy to use - 10/10, highly recommend.

I had 1 of them with same issue not be able to connect to WiFi. For some reason I don’t know, after struggling with it rebooting the machine, WiFi router and my phone for 2 days during the weekend which I’m sure no tech team was working, it suddenly get connected and has an IP address assigned in my WiFi router app finally! Magic! I actually had no idea what happened it just went back to normal. The other machine was good from the very beginning.
Now I can say good things about them. It really cleans! Better than I did! Now I can have them clean my floor during the night and while I’m away at work. The brush is zero tangled like advertised and much easier to care for compared with my old Roomba 960. I love the dust bag concept for being cleaner when throw away. I’ve worried about breathing in the flying dust for a long time with my Roomba and Dyson.
This robot can be used from a Phone app, or from the panel on the base. Before you clean with it, you have it "map" the spaces. One thing that really impressed me was how well it mapped so many different curves and rooms per level - and it even recognized stairs! (I was close by to make sure it didn't fall, but it's a very smart robot and handled it perfectly).
The look of the base and the robot is very sleek. Because the base houses water bins it’s quite large. However, it’s minimalist design and white colour me and then it will fit into most decor is without sticking out.
It’s very easy to set up, but learning the control commands. It took me a couple of tries. I found the videos on the product page, extremely helpful to explain things to me, as well as the very comprehensive and easy to understand manual that came with it. It's easy - but you have to learn what the icons mean!
This back is able to vacuum, as well as mop floors. It also can map up to four locations. You can set it to vacuum only, mop, only, or vacuum and mop. It can tell the difference between a hard floor and carpeting. It can map the rooms in the surfaces and recall them.
In terms of the vacuum, I was impressed by the suction for this type of vacuum. It senses when it didn’t pick everything up and goes over a space multiple times if it needs to. I did not put any unusual objects for it to pick up, but it was able to vacuum up regular types of dirt and debris with no problem on both carpets and hard floors. What’s really impressive is if you use the disposable bag function, at the end of the vacuum cycle it announces that it is compressing the dirt. It is able to hold dirt in the disposable bags for up to seven weeks. It compresses the dirt in a way that similar to a garbage disposal. I really like this because then at the end of seven weeks I can dispose of and replace the little bag. Some people prefer to use a bin and dump it in the garbage, and that option exists with this machine. Like all robot vacs, floors need to be clear of things like toys and shoes for it to optimize its performance. The more clear, open space you have the better the cleaning results will be.
The performance of the mop function is extremely impressive! The base contains a bin for clean water, which has to be filled (obviously) and a bin for dirty water. The robot has two rotating pads to clean the floor. When it reaches carpet, it raises the pads to not get them damp. It has sensors and it will clean spots on the floor repeatedly until it feels they are clean. Absolutely impressive.
In terms of the performance of mopping, I have followed it with a clean paper towel to check how clean the floors are, and it really does clean them to the point that there’s no dirt left! It leaves the floors slightly damp at the beginning of the mop cycle. Since I have hardwood, I like to wipe down with a cloth to make sure no moisture sits on the wood. However, as it ends the cycle, it leaves almost no dampness. The really neat thing about this is when it feels the pads are dirty it returns to the base and has a self cleaning function that truly cleans the pads. It also discards of dirty water into the dirty water bin, and gather his new water that it mixes with the cleaning solution by itself.
For me, this is a huge time saver because I can have this robot mop all of my floors. The non-wood floors do not have to be dried at all because the dampness is minimal.
In terms of how smart this machine is to navigate around furniture, it is very good! It’s able to get it self out of small spaces when it gets a little bit stuck. It seems to be able to navigate around minimal mess on the floor if I forget to lift some thing up when it’s cleaning. It requires minimal maintenance, but does need its parts wiped down with a cloth regularly. After mopping, I wiped the inside of the base down with a cloth and cleaned and dried the water bins (didn't want water standing around) but it literally took minutes to do that.
I am incredibly impressed with this unit, how well it works, how smart it is, and especially how clean it leaves my hard floors.

Pros:
- The unit is VERY smart. The mapping is very effective and accurate. It maps the environment accurately, navigates obstacles with ease and avoids stairs successfully
- The mopping for hardwood floors adds so much value than just a regular vacuum. After the first use I couldn't really tell the difference between my own cleaning (vacuuming + mopping) and the robot's
- I like the fact that it cleans the mops after every use
- It detects rugs correctly and boosts the vacuum power accordingly
Cons:
- In a multi-story house, you're limited to mopping only a certain amount of square footage before needing to return the robot to the base for mop cleaning. Since we placed the base in the 1st floor, that means doing one bedroom at a time upstairs which while not ideal, it is very manageable. I could also vacuum the whole upstairs in one go but I just rather not.
- My strongest point of frustration was actually with the mobile app user experience. It took me a long time to figure out how to configure the robot to operate in a multi map environment. The navigation of the app is not intuitive and it almost feels like it was made for desktop and poorly converted to mobile. It is usable, but definitely not intuitive.
- The price tag is not the cheapest but I feel like the value is there. It is a high end product after all.
The typical older gen of robovacs did the mopping by getting a cloth wet and pushing it around, this one does it by soaking it in cleaning solution + spinning. It makes a huge difference for anyone with tile or LVP, it can actually clean up stains/spills rather than push it around. Plus it does heated drying for the mopping pads!!
Navigation and vacuuming is top notch as well, no complaints there except that it does still get stuck in tricky spots like any other robovac — maybe future updates can solve that. It gets closer to the corners than my roborock for sure though, and seems to have the same/better suction.
Biggest thing though: tangle-free brush!! Wow, I can't believe someone actually figured it out and now we dont have to manually cut out hair from the brush every few weeks.
Some potential issues:
- The app is not the best. Once you are in, the configuration is simple and easy to understand, but getting the robot connected to your wifi may be a big hassle since it only supports 2.4ghz wifi. Plus no local connectivity option....
- Smart home options are basically just alexa which is dissapointing. I would love to see some basic IOT support or local API options, come on guys, it's 2024.
- The dust bin bag option is nice, it does compact dust quite well and lasts me a few months. But if you have a large home with a lot of pets, I still think an auto empty dust bin is a better option. It does come with a bin without the bag option though in case you want to manually empty it yourself every few weeks rather than buy the bags.

Is it perfect? No…but pretty much as good as it gets by current robot vacuum/mop combo standards. With that said….here are some of my comments/observations on operations of this unit.....
1) If you are expecting the robot vac/mop to be perfect, operate completely on its own at all times and not have to do any sort of maintenance, dustbin emptying, water refilling/emptying etc, then you will be disappointed as all of these things are required. Also, the robot may occasionally get “confused” and need to be bailed out. But not often with this unit, but it still does happen once in a while. If you understand this and have no problems with it, then you will love this machine.
2) This robot vac/mop is excellent for hard floors in terms of both vacuuming and mopping, and decent on very low pile rugs. However, even on low pile rugs, it will not vacuum as well in comparison to a regular, stick or even handheld vacuum and for any higher pile or shag rug, forget it, it won’t work at all. So if you have higher pile rugs or carpeted areas, you will need to vacuum them separately with a regular vacuum, and if you mainly have carpets in your home, then this or any other robot vacs will not work for your space.
3) You can choose to use the disposable dirt bags (3 are supplied), or the supplied reusable dustbin. Both will get full and need to be human emptied. How often will depend on the dirt level and square footage of your home. The dirt bag can last up to 7 weeks with daily use and the robot vac compresses the debris in the dustbag to extend the time before it needs to be replaced, but if your home is high traffic with kids or shedding pets, then you can likely expect to be replacing the dirt bag way before the 7 weeks is up. As for the reusable dustbin, something to note…I found as the dustbin gets fuller, the vacuum power level seems to drop, so emptying the dustbin regularly (before each job or at the end of each job) keeps the vacuum function working at its best. If the dustbin is full, the robot will stop working and alert you, so if you have a large home and have a large breed shedding dog for example, the robot may need to have the dustbin emptied in the middle of the job and if you scheduled the vacuum job to be done while you are away, then the robot will not be able to complete the job.
4) This robot vac/mop combo is geared towards mopping. The space in the base unit is used up by the 2 water containers (clean and dirty water) and the mop pad cleaning station. The robot will return to the home base to clean the mop pads on its own in the middle of a job, wet the pads, dispense soap, and will also sanitize and dry the mop pads once the job is completed. In terms of mopping, it does an amazing job and is top notch. However, on the vacuuming side, it does not have auto dirt emptying into the base unit, so every time the dirt bin in the robot unit gets full, it will need to be emptied before it can continue the job. This can be inconvenient for high-traffic households with kids and shedding pets. So if you are mainly wanting a robot for vacuuming and will likely rarely ever use the mop function, then I would say a dedicated robot vacuum with auto dirt emptying into its home base unit will provide more vacuum convenience. But if you want a robot for regular mopping as the main function, then this unit is excellent.
5) There are replacement parts needed for this robot vac/mop to work which is an added running operational cost. ie dust bin filters, mop pads, proprietary soap bottles, disposable dirtbags, vacuum side brushes, main vacuum roller…so keep that in mind as part of the running cost trade-off for convenience. The app keeps track of these parts and their "condition" so you can see how long before one of the parts needs to be changed. (see pic)
6) If you have multiple floors in your home that you want to use the robot, you will need to pick the main floor that you will likely be using the robot the most to place the home base unit because the robot returns to the home base frequently during a job to clean the mop pads or compress the dirt bag. For the other levels, you can add them as an additional map in the app (the app allows you to have 4 maps in total). Then you will need to bring the robot to that floor to do the job and when it needs to return to base you will get notified and will need to bring it back to its home base since it cannot go up or down stairs. Not a problem if you only have one level in your home or if you have one main floor that you want cleaned so you can put the home base there and only occasionally need the other levels cleaned. For those who want to have multi-floor levels cleaned on a regular basis, this is a level of inconvenience and something to consider.
7) Furniture arrangement and the amount of floor clutter are also something that will affect how the robot performs. You can’t expect to have clutter all over the floor space and yet for the robot to be able to do its job properly. So expect to do some basic tidying up before a full cleaning job to optimize performance.
Overall I absolutely love the Narwal Freo Ultra X Vacuum Mop combo. I only have 2 area rugs in my home with all hard floors and very little floor clutter so this robot performs amazingly on its own with very little maintenance required on my part. I do have 3 levels in my home, and have chosen the main floor (which is dirtiest) to place the home base unit and occasionally I carry the unit to the other 2 floor levels to give it a good mopping. The only thing that I wish this robo vac/mop can do is to be “told” to go and clean a specific area by pointing on the map in the app, but at this time, it can only be directed to clean a room. Maybe in future updates we will be able to just point to a spot on the map, but until then the easiest way to get around this is to edit your maps to divide up a map into multiple “rooms” so you have better control over directing the robot to clean only a specific area as needed and when you want the entire floor level cleaned, then just tell the robot to clean all the rooms. This seems to work very well.
You have come to the end….I know this was a lot of reading and I do apologize for my long-winded review….for those who have read this entire review, I really hope it helped.
