Blackout Buster

Blackout Buster
For a long time now, I've wanted a small generator to keep critical appliances up and running during power outages.  Critical defined as: Refrigerator, sump pump, furnace blower (heat only), modem/wifi, TV, couple of lights, and personal electronics.  So with this in mind, I purchased a Honda inverter generator a couple of years ago.  The 2000W rating is enough for my needs as the major loads are intermittent.  However, small gas generators have one glaring drawback.  These become thief bait when not being monitored at night or when you're not home.  So I decided a solar/battery generator would solve this problem. Put simply.  Run the EcoFlow at night.  Charge it with the gas generator during the day.  With that in mind, my needs are a minimum 2000W output, runtime of 6 hrs with intermittent loads, pure sine wave output, and ability to charge from a less than 800W.  I've decided to forgo the pros & cons and should you buy format of typical reviews.  There's plenty of videos and written reviews if that's your jam.  Instead I'll highlight the features that meet my needs and requirements.  First this unit features 2048Wh array of Lithium batteries.  This means (in theory) a 2000W load could be run for 1hr from this unit...  Or a 100W load could be run for 20hrs...  The real world physics and inefficiencies in DC-AC conversion make this impossible, but that's what Watt-hour rating refer to.  But this will meet my need for an average 200W per hour load to run for at least 6hrs even with my battery limits set.  (More on that below.)  Output is 2.4kW with an optional boost of up to 3.4kW...  check...  I didnt bother testing up to these loads but theres litterally dozens of videos where peolple load their EF Deltas up with space heaters and hair dryers.  But I have only seen one where somone reported the pure sine output...  So I wanted to the investigate that one.  One of the photos attached illustrates the output under a small load (25W) powering an LED TV veiwed though a Fluke 125B oscilloscope.  This is an non-liear load so it could effect power factor and could be effected by modified sine output.  But as the photo illistrates the waveform is a healthy pure sine wave, so no issues...  I did monitor the load with a Fluke 289 checking voltage/frequency fluctuations and power factor issues.  No issues to report. Let's talk about the phone app as seen though the second image.  The app provides tons of telemetry on the unit.  It's simple enough that non-electrical engineers can understand the important bits but allows for a lot of user configuration and connectivity.  This unit connects to the internet via WiFi and pulls firmware updates.  These allow the generator to be tweeked to improve efficiency and runtime.  I'd like to highlight two screens in the app in particular.  FIRST SCREEN) The AC input configuration.  On the back of the generator (next to the C14 AC input) is a physical switch.  First position is full speed charging.  This allows the unit to be charged at up to 1800W.  O.O   OH my...  that's a lot!  1800W is nearly twice what a microwave pulls.  And like a microwave, if you choose to charge using the full speed charging you should do this on circuit where ONLY the EF is plugged in.  Otherwise you will almost certainly trip a breaker.  And NEVER charge at that rate through powers trips of extension cords.  Most consumer cords/surge protectors just are not made for that much constant load.  In fact I will only be using the full speed charging in a pinch...  As in, I drive to the in-law's house to charge as quickly as possible.  But frankly speaking, charging that quickly probably isn't great for the batteries.  Just like cell phone, the quicker the charger charges the battery, the more heat needs dissipated.  So option 2 is custom (or user specified) charge rate.  In the app this is configurable from 200W to 1800W.  Initially I set mine to 400W but have since set it to 300W.  At that rate, it can charge from 20% to 80% in less than 6hrs.  Charging slower does three things...  Improves overall battery health by not generting as much heat, improves charging efficiency by not stressing the batteries or the charger, and leaves headroom for my usecase of charging from a 1800W Honda Gen.SECOND SCREEN) Battery charge-diacharge limits.  The user can set min and max charge limits.  Lithium batteries can be discharged much lower than lead-acid but my comfort limit is 30% and the hard floor in my opinion is 20%.  Any lower any the batteries become damaged overtime. The same is true for the upper limit of Lithium batteries.  80% is a good safe limit.  It's no accident that high speed charging time ratings are listed from 0 to 80%.  Above 80% and the charger has to "pump" the current into the battery.  Sort of like the last few strokes of a bicycle air pump.  It becomes more difficult.  Continually charging Lithium batteries to 100% will have a deleterious effect overtime.  IMO, 80% is the maximum that the unit should be stored at.  After removing from storage you can top it off if you want.  For my use, I'll leave my setting as 20% min discharge and 80% max charge.  If the outtage goes longer than one night I'll set the max to 100%. Overall I feel like the EcoFlow could've been my brainchild for a good as it fits my needs.  But honestly I don't feel like my usecase is unique so that's the reason for this review.  The Delta 2 Max is a good buy.  Other than light fan noise, it's virtually silent.  It's safe to use indoors, expandable, and a best friend to anyone lays awake at night worried about their sump pump or refrigerator.  Couple of PSAs:I'm not getting into the floating neutral discussion.  But if you plan on hooking this to a gas furnace, make sure you use something like an EZ-Gen or a small transfer switch that grounds the generstor.  And use the supplied AC C13 cord.  Don't use thinner gauge PC (C13) cords or extension cords as these can overheat, melt, or worse.

So, two parts:
1: The Echo Flow Delta 2 Max
I had initially just gotten this to be the power station for my camp setup. But thinking about it, it's a lot more than that. It can be used to recharge my RC batteries while at the RC field. It can power appliances at home. If you need to power a light system for the backyard. Power a projector and laptop while out at the park. It's portable power...

This is 50 lbs. It is heavy. But the handles are sturdy. Packing it into my SUV I can put things on top of the station and it won't slide off. The handles are study, if this is the only thing you are carrying at the moment, no problem. For the amount of power it stores, 50 lbs is about right. 85" TV and 350W speaker bar/sub 13 hrs run time. Yeah, I like this thing!

2: The Echo Flow 400W Solar Panel
So, in full sun light, if you line it up to the sun exactly, I get about 389W of power coming through. to line it up close to what's needed to get max wattage, get the Solar Angle Guide. Changing the angle with the Solar Angle Guide 10 degrees, increased output from 326W to 384W. Well in that particular instance. In the evening shade, no direct sun light, I was getting about 36W of power. I've only completed one full charge during various times of the day. So I can't give you an exact how long it'd take from 30% or less with good sun light to charge with this panel. But I would say about 9hrs at least for a 70% charge? I need to play around with the charging more to a have a better idea on how long and what level of sun light.

I recently acquired the EF ECOFLOW Portable Power Station DELTA 2 Max and it has been nothing short of a game-changer for my sailboat maintenance and outdoor adventures. As an individual who frequently works on a sailboat, the need for a reliable, robust power source is paramount, and this power station has exceeded all my expectations.

Firstly, its impressive 2400W output and 2048Wh capacity have been instrumental in running a variety of equipment. From power tools essential for boat repairs to lighting that extends my working hours, it handles everything with ease. Moreover, I’ve even used it to power a small heater, which speaks volumes about its versatility and power.

The rapid charging feature is another highlight. Being able to fully charge the power station in just about an hour is incredible, especially when time is of the essence. This feature has saved me a lot of time and hassle, allowing me to focus more on my work and less on power management.

Its portability is a huge advantage. Despite its high power output, it’s compact enough to be carried around easily, which is crucial for someone who is constantly moving around on a sailboat or outdoors.

Lastly, the durability and build quality are top-notch, ensuring that this power station can withstand the challenging marine environment. It feels robust and reliable, which is essential for any equipment used in such settings.

In conclusion, the EF ECOFLOW Portable Power Station DELTA 2 Max is an outstanding product that I highly recommend. It’s a perfect fit for anyone in need of a powerful, fast-charging, and durable power source for outdoor activities or marine use. A solid 5-star rating from me!

Charges crazy fast through AC outlet. Charging with solar panel is obviously slower charging but it does charge up just fine. AC outlet will charge it with like 1650 watts and gets to 100% in a bit over an hour. With the 220w solar panel I got, I set it to charge from 60% and it said about 11 hours till full, but I also don't think my panel was at an optimal angle because it was only outputting about 150w. Love how the panels fold up into the case, very portable, and for the most part I feel like the case offers some good protection during transport.

Performance is impressive, for what I need it for. I need to run 1 3d printer on display, lights, charging for my phone and other electronics of course.
at 100% charge, I ran 1 of my 3d printers off of it for over 11 hours and the battery was only 60%. I think this setup will work PERFECTLY for a vendor booth. This is going to make my setup really pop.

I bought the ECOFLOW Portable Power Station DELTA 2 Max to use as a backup for my home and for camping trips. I was amazed by the large capacity, the fast dual charging, and the multiple output ports. It can power almost everything I need, from my fridge to my laptop. It is also very easy to use and monitor with the EcoFlow app.

The power station is very user-friendly and convenient. It has a clear LCD screen that shows the input and output power, the battery level, and the remaining time. It also has an EcoFlow app that allows me to control and monitor the power station from my phone. The app is very easy to use and intuitive. It connects to the power station via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and shows me real-time data and alerts. I can also update the firmware and access customer support through the app.

The product came in a well-packaged box with all the accessories and manuals included. The packaging was sturdy and secure, and it protected the power station from any damage during shipping. The box also had a handle for easy lifting and moving.

Overall, I am very happy with my purchase of the EcoFlow Delta Max. It is a powerful, reliable, and versatile portable power station that meets all my needs. It is worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars A caregiver's lifesavor

Ecoflow has done it again: make my life easier as a caregiver. This time, the game changer is their Delta 2 Max power station.

I’ll leave it to others to figure out and pinpoint the technical pros and cons of this device. All I can say is that for me, being able to generate electricity when needed is deeply reassuring and helpful.

I am amazed by Ecoflow’s user-friendly ecosystem and forever grateful to them for helping me sleep better at night. Indeed, knowing that my power stations, smart extra battery and solar panels will help me take good care of my 93-year-old mother, who has dementia and who cannot walk anymore, is priceless.

After reading extensively about Delta 2 Max and its LFP battery chemistry, deciding to upgrade to this device was a no-brainer. Also, the fact that a smart extra battery could double its capacity up to over 4kWh was a determining factor.

Add to these latest acquisitions two previously bought Delta 2, two 160 W portable solar panels and one 220 W bifacial panel (renewable energy now strikes me as pure magic), and we’re all set to face the next challenge.

We are blessed to live in a region safe from natural disasters, but power failures do happen - a disturbing thought in light of my mother’s condition. In fact, just recently we were out of power for five days but we managed just fine thanks to our EF products.

Although I was able to recharge my power stations twice a day thanks to our town’s generators and to friends who had power, I figured we still needed to be more self-sufficient, hence the purchase of a Delta 2 Max and of a Delta Max Smart Battery following that power failure. Those extra 4000 W give me huge peace of mind.

I can envision how much easier managing through the next blackout will be, knowing that our new equipment will give us greater leeway while increasing intervals between recharges. Mind you, our pair of Delta 2’s were incredibly useful during those five days without electricity, as they powered my mother’s lift, hospital bed and mattress. I could also warm some water to wash her in the morning. They powered our full-size fridge and 5.5 cu. ft. chest freezer, as well as the sump pump when needed. Router, microwave, coffee machine, cell phone, laptop, IPad, DVD player, lights, radio… bring it on !

As I am writing this review, we in Canada are on track for our worst-ever wildfire season, including northern Quebec. Although we live in Montreal, hundreds of miles away, some of these fires resulted in loss of electricity for tens of thousands of people in our city. There is no such thing as avoiding natural disasters’ impacts anymore and that is why you can never be too prepared.

What about Delta 2 Max’s lifespan of 3000 complete cycles until it reduces to 80% capacity ? this amazing durability is definitely impacting the way I am using it, for it is not only about being ready to handle potential emergencies anymore. Some days I just enjoy making good use of it by living partially off the grid. I’ve even reorganized the kitchen in order to make it more accessible when cooking, amongst other things.

Owning two Delta 2’s plus a Delta 2 Max seems to perfectly meet our needs, offering us a great mix between portability (Delta 2) and power (Delta 2 Max and an extra battery). In fact, being able to rely on such extra power definitely feels like we’ve reached the big leagues. It’s a great feeling.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Huge Improvement Over the Competition
Reviewed in Canada on October 16, 2023
Style: DELTA 2 Max 2048WVerified Purchase
The EcoFlow Delta 2 Max is outstanding. It is attractive, lightweight, and has a simple intuitive layout of switches and power inputs and outlets. The internal 1800 watt charger is also a game changer. You don't need to lug around an external charging brick and you can recharge the Delta 2 Max in a little over an hour. And the internal fans are quiet.

After a couple of weeks of being shutdown, the Delta 2 Max still retained a state of charge of 100% - there appears to be little or no power loss when it is being stored.

The app is intuitive and very easy to use.

I bought the EcoFlow Delta 2 Max to power my ICECO VL90 ProD Fridge/Freezer. After 24 hours of running both sides of the ICECO as a fridge, the state of charge had only dropped to 78%. At this rate of power consumption., the EcoFlow would be able to power the fridge for 4.5 days.

This is a huge improvement over the Bluetti AC200Max that I had purchased (and returned) last year. The state of charge in the Bluetti had dropped to 58% after 24 hours - implying only a 2.4 day runtime. The internal power consumption of the Bluetti AC200Max under no load was almost 1% per hour, which is exorbitant.

Additionally, the Bluetti was supplied with a large external 200 watt charger. The Bluetti required about 10 hours to fully recharge, as compared to the EcoFlow Delta 2 Max which requires a little over an hour to fully recharge using its built-in 1800 watt charger.

So, if you are looking for a lightweight, compact, quick charging, and easy to use power station that has the ability to power a lower wattage device over several days, the EcoFlow Delta 2 Max is the perfect choice.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good Solar generator.

Style: DELTA 2 Max+220W Solar PanelVerified Purchase
I have owned the ECOFLOW Solar Generator DELTA 2 Max 2048Wh with 220W Solar Panel for about a month now. My intended purpose is for electrical backup power during short power outages which can be frequent where we live in the country. This is my second Ecoflow solar generator product. The first was a Delta 1300 which I am happy with and still own. The Delta 2 Max is a nice upgrade. It has 50% more capacity, has much quieter fans, lithium iron phosphate batteries (LiFePo4), higher AC wattage output (2400), and a 5 year warranty, amongst other things. At 51 pounds, it is a fairly heavy piece to haul around. Unfortunately, weight goes along with higher capacity. It’s just the nature of the beast. Batteries are heavy.
One nice feature of the Delta 2 series is that it is firmware upgradeable and can also be controlled by an app on your phone. Not only does the app allow you to see the inputs and outputs of the Delta 2 Max, but you can set a number of parameters of how you want your unit to work. For instance, although you can charge the unit through its AC power cord at 1800 watts, you can set the charge rate anywhere from 200 watts to 1800 watts in 100 watt increments. Charging at a slower rate is easier on your batteries over their lifetime. Having the ability to load new firmware can get rid of bugs, or add new features. I just did an update that changed the power switchover time from 30 ms to 20 ms. It’s still not quite as fast as a UPS, but it is now closer. More products/computers being powered with the Ecoflow while it is plugged into the AC wall outlet should be uninterrupted when the power fails. In any case, it has been improved free of charge.
The display on the Delta 2 Max is very clear and easy to read. It shows input and output loads like AC and solar, and DC loads including the cigar lighter socket, USB-A and USB-C sockets and the barrel plug sockets. Up to 2 extra 2048 watt external batteries can be added to give a total of 6144 watt hours for extra capacity.
The Delta 2 Max has run everything I have tried with it including an induction cooktop, a portable ice maker, a portable steam cleaner, a coffee machine, a 12 volt power source and numerous USB powered devices. When considering this power source, just be aware that it is not going to power your house. It will power most of the things in your house, but not all at once! If you are using, say, a 1500 watt device, it will likely run your battery down in a couple of hours. Be aware of power management, and what power requirements your devices need. If you do that, you should have a more pleasant user experience.
The Ecoflow Delta 2 Max came packaged with the Ecoflow 220 watt portable solar panels. Included was an adapter which hooked the solar panel’s MC-4 adapters with the Delta 2 Max’s XT60i connector. There are actually 2 XT60i inputs on the Delta 2 rated at 500 watts each totaling 1000 watts. In order to max out these inputs, you would require a more substantial setup than the included 220 watt panels. The panels look very well made, and come in a carry bag which doubles as a support mount to hold the panels directed towards the sun. It is actually 4 bifacial panels folded up and they weigh about 21 pounds. They aren’t as durable as an aluminum sided solid panel (no one’s portable solar panel assemblies are), but they are certainly more portable and can be taken with you while camping or off roading. They are not meant to be left outside 24/7 in my opinion. I have only had the opportunity to try the panels out once, but I was happy with their performance. It was mid October on a sunny day around 11:30 AM and it initially showed 192 watts going into the Delta 2 Max. It settled down a bit as the panels warmed up but still put out 188 watts for a few hours until the sun dropped lower in the sky. See photo….hard to read but it is at 191 watts. When a solar panel is rated, the panels are at 25C and under a light intensity of 1000 watts per square meter. In actual practice, the panels get hotter than 25C and the sun is often not at an ideal angle. There is moisture in the air which cuts down solar radiation, even though the sky looks blue. My experience was for these panels to put out 87% of rated power on an October day, which I consider to be very good. I would expect to have higher output on a day in June. The carry case which doubles as a panel support works, but is not ideal. I found it awkward to set up and not suitable for a windy area as a gust of wind can blow them over. Be advised that this set of panels will not be able to completely charge a dead Delta 2 Max by itself in a single day. You would need a perfect day and have to constantly move them perpendicular to the sun all day long and still fall short. Power output during the early and later parts of the solar day will have much less output than at noon when the sun is highest. Again, it’s just the way it is with any manufacturer’s solar panels.
At $2899 for the package, it is an expensive purchase. I would suggest getting it on sale. Ecoflow often has sales. Right now (Nov 17 2023) there is the same sale on as when I bought mine just over a month ago. They are presently selling it with a $900 discount, so at $1999, it’s a pretty good deal. Do your research with what you want it for, how much capacity you need and what other products are out there. I think you will find Ecoflow products compare very favorably to what else is presently on the market
