Sigh... B&W needs better usability engineering
This review is for the Bowers & Wilkins PI7 S2 (Blue).TL;DR │ I have the original PI7. Like the PI7, These are frustrating to use in real-life — you can't practically use transparency (pass-through) mode⁽ⁿ⁰⁾. The touch controls are non-customizable with stupid functions.⁽ⁿ¹⁾ On the flip side, Bluetooth finally works⁽ⁿ²⁾, and these sound a bit louder⁽ⁿ³⁾. The battery is a little better as well, according to them.⁽ⁿ⁴⁾CONTENTS: Intro │ What I Like │ What I Don't Like │ Package │ Outro │ Notes │ Verdict- - - - -I've been using the PI7 (which I'll refer to as "S1") for quite a while. It's a good-sounding pair of earphones but it only worked in a vacuum. In the real world? Bluetooth drops, sound levels are low, and transparency mode takes 1 minute to activate. And why on earth would I need a dedicated, non-configurable [touch] button for a voice assistant? I bought these thinking they solved the frustrations I had.Sadly, not really. In my opinion, this should not have been an "S2". These are more of an... "S1.1" — it's just a tweak. An incomplete tweak with a fresh coat of paint. An update, not an upgrade. Kinda like a "refresh" and not a "redesign" (in automotive). This product feels like it's been designed in a vacuum.WHAT I LIKE │ + │+ IMO, the sound signature is still the best in class.+ Audio retransmission is actually useful.+ aptX Adaptive.+ Solid build on metallic parts.+ USB-C (yes, this is a big pro).+ Case supports wireless chargingVS. PI7 S1:++ Bluetooth finally works. But what a low bar this is.⁽ⁿ²⁾++ Sound is subjectively better and objectively louder.⁽ⁿ³⁾++ Tiny bit better battery, but almost insignificant.⁽ⁿ⁴⁾++ Uses the newer app.⁽ⁿ⁵⁾++ Better color choices. I like blue.++ Charging case is lighter.WHAT I DON'T LIKE │ × │× Expensive for something unpolished.× No ANC/transparency quick toggle.⁽ⁿ⁰⁾× Non-customizable functions.⁽ⁿ¹⁾× App issues.⁽ⁿ⁵⁾× This is the third B&W app I had to use.⁽ⁿ⁵⁾× Non-braided cables.× No LDAC.× Bluetooth 5.0? Really?VS. PI7 S1:×× Charging case feels cheaper.×× Case magnet is stronger; harder to take earbuds.×× All things considered, feels less premium.PACKAGE │ ✓ ✗ │✓ Bowers & Wilkins PI7 S2 earphones.✓ Silicone ear tips (S, M, L - color matched).✓ Charging case (color matched).✓ USB C to C cable.✓ USB C to 3.5mm TRS audio cable.✓ Printed materials.✓ Small box.✗ NO Foam TipsThink about this: I stopped using the PI7 in favor of a pair of Pixel Buds Pro (about AirPods Pro equivalent). Even with the S2, I'd likely still use the "cheaper" earbuds I have. I usually get really good-sounding headphones which is why I got the PI7. But it stinks to actually use it as a set of "wireless" earphones because it's hard to use, in practice, the way you a person would use a wireless earphone.- - - - -NOTES⁽ⁿ⁰⁾ When do you practically need to turn transparency (passthrough) mode on? "Immediately when needed", right? It happens when you need to quickly hear what is happening around you, or if someone starts talking to you. Well, guess what, you take your phone out, you unlock it, you navigate to the app, you wait forever for the app to load, you navigate to turn transparency mode on, and you press it. And that is if the app even "sees" your device.⁽ⁿ⁵⁾ It's faster to just take off the earphones, which defeats the purpose of transparency mode. Then you have to do it all over again to turn it off. REALLY, Bowers and Wilkins? Who's in charge of these things? I do not understand. They have solved this in the PX7 S2.⁽ⁿ¹⁾ The touch functions are non-customizable. The transparency mode function could have been accommodated through this. I do not care about the voice assistant. I am outside with people using my wireless earphones, not trying to control my smart devices or do a google search. I can use my phone screen for that. It's fine cont being able to customize the play/pause control, but the press-and-hold? Why not give us the option? (For reference, others like the Pixel Buds Pro have this customizable option).⁽ⁿ²⁾ The other major complaint I have was the abhorrent Bluetooth signal. I essentially CANNOT use the PI7 S1 earphones with my phone in my pocket. Period. I have to lay my phone on my driveway (concrete) when trying to do yard work, and even that does not work 100%. Seems to be fixed on the S2. Will update here if I encounter a bad connection again.⁽ⁿ³⁾ My last major complaint with the PI7 S1 was how weak the sound output was. Abnormally low in volume, in my opinion. The S2s kinda improved on that issue, but... still lacking relative to other earphones.⁽ⁿ⁴⁾ I usually do not use my earphones all day, but when I do, I notice the short battery life. In my usage, these still do not last, especially if you need ANC. The "extra" juice in the S2 is negligible and won't positively affect your unbiased perception if you care about the battery. Personally, I do not see the difference.⁽ⁿ⁵⁾ This is the THIRD app from B&W I had to use. Although it seems like it's the best, they're all the same with just different skins. The app still has this issue: The app sometimes could not find the headphones, EVEN WHEN IT IS ALREADY CONNECTED and playing music. At least now that I only use PX7 S2 and PI7 S2, I'll only have to have one app.- - -VERDICT: I "kinda" recommend this product★★☆☆☆ | 2 stars out of 5. Great earphones, ruined by the lack of quick transparency+ANC switch. 4 stars if you do not care about transparency. Maybe 5 if you're also wealthy.Questions? Pros:
-High quality detailed Sound that matches sound signature of B&W 700 series speakers.
-Can discern between HiRes lossless sources, and compressed MP3/AAC streaming sources as higher grade over-the-ear headphones can.
-Wireless Transmitter Case (if you want to hook up to a turntable headphone jack for example)
    -Aptx Adaptive
-Multipoint (sort of) Connection for up to 4 devices
    -Has Transparency Mode
    -Has ANC Mode

    Cons:
-Bass is lacking. No EQ in companion app, third party app is required for EQ correction. Bass needs boosting at 50hz by about 6dB, with a wide Q factor. (Maybe a seal issue)
-Treble is overemphasized above 10Khz. No EQ in companion app, third party app is required for EQ correction, reducing 10.5Khz through 14Khz by -3db
-Multipoint connection does not switch smartly like Sennheiser earbuds (ie listening to Computer, and then accept a call on phone), needs to be taken over by the Bluetooth enabled device.
-Short battery life, drains ~40% per hour with Passthrough Mode or ANC enabled.
-Passthrough mode is a bit of a fishbowl sound, inferior to Sennheiser TWS 3 transparency.
-Passtrhough mode can only be enabled/disabled through the companion phone app. Needs button control.
-ANC Mode isn't more effective than passive noise cancellation with a good seal, and changes eq curve for the worst.
    -No volume control!!!
-No Companion app for desktop computer

The B&W Pi7 S2 is a great earbud for stationary usage, such as at a work computer, particularly when using a keyboard for controls earbuds are lacking such as Volume. Not so great for traveling and workouts (the Sennheiser TWS 3 has the upper hand in this regard). Battery life won't last long enough for a long flight.
The earbuds pair very well with the USB Sennheiser BTD 600 dongle and uses AptX Adaptive codec as hoped. Overall, I find the sound quality to be significantly better than any other earbud I've used, especially in terms of detail, resolution, and natural soundstage. The sound signature matches B&W Speaker: B&W Bookshelf Speakers have Great mids, airy highs, but definitely need a good subwoofer to provide the slam missing in the bottom; overall neutral-warm sound (I really like B&W Speakers, bested by Dynaudio and Focal). These earbuds mids from low mids to high mids are very balanced, not scooped, not blooming and loose, never honky, bloated or quacky--Just right!

Treble is somewhat overemphasized from 10.5Khz-14Khz (that I reduce by 3db in the Peace EQ app for Windows, or PowerAmp for Android). I also find the mid bass to be strong and good, along with the mids. However, I find the sub-bass below 100hz to be lacking (contrary to reviews I've read). The bass is mildly present, but very recessed, especially for aggressive music, like Hardcore, Death Metal, Hardcore, Progressive Metal, Skate Punk, etc. I boost the sub-bass around 50hz by 3-6dB, depending on the mix to get that kick drum oompf. Some of the lack of bass could be an ear-tip seal issue (the medium sized ear tips work substantially better for me, but I feel like I could still get a better seal and may order some Comply ear-tips to try).

Enabling ANC skews the EQ curve for a less desirable sound. Transparency mode works for further away sounds, like a car driving by, doorbell, etc, but sounds like underwater A.M. radio for conversations.

Compared to Sennheiser TWS 3, the Sennheiser is an all-around better value to price point product in terms of ANC, Transparency, Multipoint Connection, and Companion App. However, the sheer sound quality of the B&W Pi 7 S2 is substantially better--its not even close, with a bigger, more refined "in the room" feel. Sennheiser TWS 3 however has better Bass and Treble control through the 5 band EQ (though everything at 0 sounds nice and neutral). B&W has that "audiophile" sound, and Sennheiser have that really good consumer grade sound (which is still much better than Apple, Sony, and Bose). It all depends on your needs: tech features vs pure sound quality. I like the B&W Pi7 S2 while stationary at my desk (to be honest, a good pair of over-the-ear cans would be more practical and beneficial in this scenario), and the Sennheiser TWS 3 for on-the-go needs, phone calls, and situations where I need to frequently hear my surroundings.

Some of the reviews I read about the Bowers and Wilkins PI7 S2 turned out to be accurate and true. While the sound quality is decent, the technical glitches with this product is totally unacceptable for a $400 pair of earbuds.

Pairing was a major problem and took several attempts to get them to pair with iPhone 15 and Samsung S23 Ultra. After several grueling attempts to pair, the connection kept dropping if i moved away from the phone. This was very annoying as I had to re-pair them with the phone, which problematic to begin with. I was very disappointed with the PI7 S2. Because of the pairing issue, I didn’t even get a chance to really test the noise cancelling performance as they didn't stay connected long enough for me to assess the ANC feature.

I would suggest as a consumer, that Bowers and Wilkins discontinue the sale of this product and go back to the lab and create a better performing product. The PI7 S2 is an underperforming product and certainly not worth the $400 price tag.

TL;DR │ I have the original PI7. The battery is a little better as well, according to them.⁽ⁿ⁴⁾

I've been using the PI7 (which I'll refer to as "S1") for quite a while. It's a good-sounding pair of earphones but it only worked in a vacuum. In the real world? Bluetooth drops, sound levels are low, and transparency mode takes 1 minute to activate. And why on earth would I need a dedicated, non-configurable [touch] button for a voice assistant? I bought these thinking they solved the frustrations I had.

Sadly, not really. In my opinion, this should not have been an "S2". These are more of an... "S1.1" — it's just a tweak. An incomplete tweak with a fresh coat of paint. An update, not an upgrade. Kinda like a "refresh" and not a "redesign" (in automotive). This product feels like it's been designed in a vacuum.

    WHAT I LIKE │ + │
+ IMO, the sound signature is still the best in class.
+ Audio retransmission is actually useful.
    + aptX Adaptive.
+ Solid build on metallic parts.
+ USB-C (yes, this is a big pro).
    + Case supports wireless charging

    VS. PI7 S1:
++ Bluetooth finally works. But what a low bar this is.⁽ⁿ²⁾
++ Sound is subjectively better and objectively louder.⁽ⁿ³⁾
++ Tiny bit better battery, but almost insignificant.⁽ⁿ⁴⁾
    ++ Uses the newer app.⁽ⁿ⁵⁾
++ Better color choices. I like blue.
    ++ Charging case is lighter.

    WHAT I DON'T LIKE │ × │
    × Expensive for something unpolished.
    × No ANC/transparency quick toggle.⁽ⁿ⁰⁾
    × Non-customizable functions.⁽ⁿ¹⁾
    × App issues.⁽ⁿ⁵⁾
× This is the third B&W app I had to use.⁽ⁿ⁵⁾
    × Non-braided cables.
    × No LDAC.
    × Bluetooth 5.0? Really?

    VS. PI7 S1:
    ×× Charging case feels cheaper.
×× Case magnet is stronger; harder to take earbuds.
×× All things considered, feels less premium.

Think about this: I stopped using the PI7 in favor of a pair of Pixel Buds Pro (about AirPods Pro equivalent). Even with the S2, I'd likely still use the "cheaper" earbuds I have. I usually get really good-sounding headphones which is why I got the PI7. But it stinks to actually use it as a set of "wireless" earphones because it's hard to use, in practice, the way you a person would use a wireless earphone.

    - - - - -

    NOTES

⁽ⁿ⁰⁾ When do you practically need to turn transparency (passthrough) mode on? They have solved this in the PX7 S2.

⁽ⁿ¹⁾ The touch functions are non-customizable. (For reference, others like the Pixel Buds Pro have this customizable option).

⁽ⁿ²⁾ The other major complaint I have was the abhorrent Bluetooth signal. I essentially CANNOT use the PI7 S1 earphones with my phone in my pocket. Period. I have to lay my phone on my driveway (concrete) when trying to do yard work, and even that does not work 100%. Seems to be fixed on the S2. Will update here if I encounter a bad connection again.

⁽ⁿ³⁾ My last major complaint with the PI7 S1 was how weak the sound output was. Abnormally low in volume, in my opinion. The S2s kinda improved on that issue, but... still lacking relative to other earphones.

⁽ⁿ⁴⁾ I usually do not use my earphones all day, but when I do, I notice the short battery life. In my usage, these still do not last, especially if you need ANC. The "extra" juice in the S2 is negligible and won't positively affect your unbiased perception if you care about the battery. Personally, I do not see the difference.

⁽ⁿ⁵⁾ This is the THIRD app from B&W I had to use. Although it seems like it's the best, they're all the same with just different skins. The app still has this issue: The app sometimes could not find the headphones, EVEN WHEN IT IS ALREADY CONNECTED and playing music. At least now that I only use PX7 S2 and PI7 S2, I'll only have to have one app.

    - - -

VERDICT: I "kinda" recommend this product
★★☆☆☆ | 2 stars out of 5. Great earphones, ruined by the lack of quick transparency+ANC switch. 4 stars if you do not care about transparency. Maybe 5 if you're also wealthy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bowers & Wilkins klingen deutlich besser als Airpods
Reviewed in Germany on April 1, 2024
    Color: Midnight BlueVerified Purchase
